A gaming-related bleg...

Any pointers on getting my old CD of Quake to run on this P4/XP box?

I haven't shot the machine yet, but the idea's getting more attractive by the hour...

Download the dark places engine.

It replaces glquake.exe.

And if that doesn't do it, try a virtual machine. There are some good ones availible for XP and you can set it up to emulate whatever the original Quake called for.

Ok, it may be overkill, but it'll pre-solve the same problem for the next old game you get an itch to play too.

I can't help. I'm one of the only 7 people on the entire planet who have Vista Ultimate in 64 bit and actually have no problems with their PCs. Unfortunately, the original Quake ran under 16 bits which when inserted into the PC, Vista actually starts laughing so hard I have to do a CTRL+ALT+DEL and shut down the humor process.

I'm thinking DOSBox is the way to go.

Good 'ole id Software re-released all their old games via Valve and that's what they used to make it all work. Unfortunately they might have peed on the GPL a bit when they did it, but it seems they've rectified it since then.

Have you already tried switching the operating system to Windows 95 under the compatibility tab in the the program's properties?
