Overspecialization.

Has anyone else seen that cute little Weird Al movie, UHF? Remember the television commercial for the store called "Spatula City"? Am I the only one who thinks of that every time I drive past a Cartridge World or a Batteries Plus?

Hello, this is Sy Greenblum, president of Spatula City.
I liked their spatulas so much, I bought the company.

Badgers? We don't need no stinkin' badgers!

UHF. Right up there with "Quick Change" in the category of "odd movies few others have seen but I can recite from memory"...

Tam,

Here in L.A. (well, the Valley, in Van Nuys, technically...) there's a store called 'Box City' that gives me the same thought.

...Cartridge World?

It's not what you think, Dr. Strangegun. The name throws me off every time I drive by one too.

Printer and copy machine toner cartridges.

Oh, yeah, Cartridge World - first time I saw that, I thought: "Sweet! Wonder if they have .32-20?" Sigh, it was not to be.

And I wore out the UHF soundtrack too.

UHF! I love that movie, rank that up there what the two Hot Shots movies and Airplane.
Weird Al is one singer that can act!

Glad to see I'm not the only one to think that Cartridge World stocked actual cartridges. Sadly, once again I was disappointed to find just another printer supply shop.

The home version of "Wheel of Fish" stinks.

I feel so stupid!

"Where can you find name brand spatulas at a fraction of the cost?"

*t'hee*

But regarding specialization, I thought that about tire stores when they first showed up and they seem to be doing ok. . . so why not. . .

I don't know of any tire stores that won't do brakes, replace belts, oil/filter or any other routine service for your car if you ask them..... it's not like they don't want your money...

I was VERY happy the first time I spotted a Cartridge World...and VERY disappointed when I realized that it wasn't the kind of cartridges I had expected. For a brief moment, though, hope for America's future filled my heart.

Every - and I do mean every - time I grab a spatula from the drawer the little jingle, "We sell spatulas...and that's all!" zings across my brain.

That, and "Supplies!"

Ha, UHF. Such an awesome movie. I'm so glad I'm not the only one who hums that tune when spatulating things.

Nothing says "I love you" like a spatula.

And on that note, I'm off to have a drink and a twinkie weiner sandwich.

In high school (looong before UHF), my best friend and I swore that when we were old enough, we would open a store that only sold Scotch tape and the little things that screw on the end of antennas.
