Today In History: Hail, Columbia!

On this date in 1981,the shuttle Columbia launched from Pad 39-A at the Kennedy Space Center for the second time.

STS-2 was the first time ever that a manned spacecraft was reused for a second flight.

I remember my Dad waking me up to watch the lift-off on TV. 2 years later he had gotten out of the Air force and wangled a job on the space coast and he got to take me to see the Sally Ride launch from the viewing center on the cape.

In 1986 I was watching outside my Junior high when Challenger died. I think that moment was when my childhood ended.

I actually worked on the Columbia, after STS-107. Very sad.
