It really is the juice.

In honor of McGwire's totally unsurprising confession...

At least my favorite baseball players won't be getting any asterisks next to their numbers in Cooperstown...

And at least they'll be getting into Cooperstown!

Yeah, McGwire isn't likely to ever get into the HOF- same for most anybody from the steroid era who had any suspicion cast upon them- Bonds, Canseco, etc.- they can forget about it. It might even be possible for MLB to invalidate the records from that bunch, restoring Maris to the single year HR leader.

Still, the guy was a heck of a hitter before his 'roid use. I wonder if the steroids were a contributing factor to his many injuries as well- it is possible they had a negative effect. In some ways McGwire was right that they may not have helped much; no drug will give you a good eye at the plate. However, everything from the 90s just seems tainted now.

A) That's a myopic statement, even taken within the context of your entire spiel; there were plenty of guys of that era who've never taken (or have even been suspect) steroids who are now enjoying their due respect in the HOF.

B) The abuse of steriods in baseball certainly carried over well into the double-aughts, and I'm sure there were aplenty before the nineties rolled around too...and there will be more, guaranteed.

Barry will be in the HOF. He was hitting 30+HRs a year while stealing 30+bases and hitting in the .360s- regularly.

McGwire was great even before the steroid thing. He'll be in the HOF.

Same with Clemens.

Luckily, my favorite player looked like an accountant. Tam knows who i'm talking about.

The HOF has said that they're going to have an exhibit about the role of steroids in baseball. I think that Bonds, McGwire, etc., should have a bust in the regular Hall, modeled before they used. Then in the steroids exhibit, they get another bust with their ginormous heads. That would be great.

One word for the 90's to redeem it.

At least that is how they pronounce it in B'more Murlin, hon.

The only juice in him is orange.

What is this Baseball of which you speak?

Ahh, yes I remember it now. Twas a game that I used to watch before the millionaires on both sides decided to strike and ruined the 1994 season.

A pox upon them all.

'94 ... Wasn't that the second strike?

I kinda forget as I pretty much told Ted Turner and baseball to take a walk back then and haven't much paid attention to the freak show since.

PS... McGwire, Canseco and one or two others floated through the minors here. It was a great time back in the 80's to see power hitters play.

Well Mr. Burns had done it,
The power plant had won it,
With Roger Clemens clucking all the while,
Mike Scioscia's tragic illness made us smile,
While Wade Boggs lay unconscious on the barroom tile...

We're talkin' softball...
From Maine to San Diego.
Talkin' softball...
Mattingly and Canseco.
Ken Griffey's grotesquely swollen jaw.
Steve Sax and his run-in with the law.
We're talkin' Homer... Ozzie and the Straw.

NJT - That was one of their best episodes.

Don't be too sure your favorites are safe because they didn't bulge like McGwire and Bonds and Giambi. Lots of people use steroids more for what they do to recovery ability than for the ability to build bulk. There are plenty of pro fighters who walk around at the bottom end of the "healthy" weight for their heights, cut an additional 10-20 pounds before a weigh-in, and still get caught with steroids because by juicing they can train more and harder than any natural man. Baseball doesn't take the sheer amount of physically demanding skill training that MMA does, but the principle is the same.

I hope Ripken is clean, but I have no faith anymore. Luckily I never cared that much for baseball anyway.

I'm about at the point of dumping the lot of 'em because it's tough to continue cheering for a bunch of overpaid crybabies who go out of their way to cheat. I'm sick of politics for the exact-same reasons, of course.

Rod Carew and Omar Vizquel. I fear that Vizquel will be overlooked for the Hall because of the avalanche of great slugging shortstops of this era, but I say he was at least the equal of Ozzie Smith and Luis Aparicio (the best there ever were) with the bat and the glove.

Plus he was willing to tell it like it was: Jose Mesa flat out gacked in the '97 Series when he couldn't find the sand to throw a heater to Charles Frakking Johnson.
