Gun Culture 2.0

TV shows like Top Shot and games like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare are making firearms more popular and mainstream than they've been in generations.

The downside? This guy right here:

Between the relaxed grooming standards and the WASR that looks like a Tapco catalog threw up on it, you just know you're in for a treat, even before you get to the "I learned this technique by watching a video of an Iraqi sergeant on the internet" and the subsequent jaw-dropping gun-handling. Yeah, because the NCO corps of Third World armies with inshallah attitudes towards gun safety is exactly where I go shopping for my firearm manipulation tips...

I find myself kind of agog that he didn't bust any inadvertent caps during the making of that painful vignette. I'm wondering how many out-takes involved dropping the gun because the buttstock slipped out of his shoulder pocket and he couldn't support the AK with just two fingers gripping a slippery fingernail-sized charging handle?

Next he'll be telling you how it's the bestest technique ever because it's a "gross" motor skill.

About that Iraqi sergeant, anyone want to bet why he was demonstrating it on the internet and not as a standard manual of arms step? Bueller?

I'm kind of at a loss as to why there's no minimum IQ requirement for purchase of a video camera.

The idea of grabbing a spare mag and using it to sweep the mag lever and magazine on an AK to pop mag out has been around for a while. I have to admit, when I heard about it I tried it a few times just to see how it worked. Yea, is ok. Scratches the hell out of stuff, but who cares, it's just an AK (ok, I care. I don't mind scratches here and there, but I don't like the idea of making them on purpose).

The whole idea of holding onto the charging handle while doing it? That one is new to me, and looks like a stupid idea.

Then, I'm not a tactical kind of guy. My AK (a polish underfold) was bought because it was cheap and I thought it might be fun to shoot now and then (and to make stupid scaredy cat antis cry). It is fine the way it is, there aren't any rails on it and does it need any.

Yes, but that's not the bad part of the video. :o

RE: 'You got Tapco all over your AK', the setup on that WASR is pretty much the AK right out of Modern Warfare 2.

bwa ha ha ha ha!

Using the other mag to clear an old one is better served with the "74" model bakelite model, or at least it was when the 74 mags were given away in cereal boxes, I think they run a bit more than 5 a piece these days.

If I'm in a rifle fight, I'd rather keep my mag than drop it on the ground, as self loading models doesn't work so well without any of them.

All of y'all can go sit on a fencepost - I find his tactical corset rather fetching.

Not interested enough to watch the clown play on the video - by chance would that be an airsoft WASR? Or did his mom let him get the real thing?

Will this fine gem of an exemplar FINALLY get someone at Bravo Company to release the super-secret tactical BCMHajiFighter AK-ChargingHandle (with Mojo-Sized picatinny rails), finally? Puh-leeze DeltaForce? Else Tapco is gonna beat 'em in sales if they don't.

On a related note, in Modern Warfare 2, your charater reloads the FN Fal by knocking the old magazine out with the new one. No evidence of holding it by the charging handle, however.

Wolfman said...

Another minor point- Am I the only one that noticed he lost more time fumbling the magazine in than he gained in not cycling the bolt from battery? That being said, I can kind of see the utility in the 'slap the empty' move. Still, mag change speed seems to be a function of training, not technique.

Goober said...

I've said it for years, and I'll continue to say it until I'm blue in the face - if you've gotten yourself into a situation where the literally tenth of a second that you save with some tactical reloading trick is going to make the difference in your altercation, you've already lost.

Duke said...

Tam thanks for the laugh, seriously how do you find these videos. I would have thought he would have practiced more before doing a video. But maybe that's as good as he gets.

cj said...

And I'm reminded of all the people claiming most problems are simply 'training issues'...this guy would claim he's been properly trained to not pull the trigger, so it's ok for him to have his boogerhook in there.

Netpackrat said...

Since the safety appeared to be in the on position (fully up) in the portion of the video showing the right side of the weapon, there's no way he could have pulled the bolt carrier far enough to the rear to pick up a cartridge from the magazine anyway. That doesn't rule out the possibility that there was one in the chamber the whole time, however, that couldn't be ejected for the same reason.

It's Cletus poker!

I'll see your Cletus with a Tapco full house AK, and raise you with a Cletus straight flush 45.

Go to time index 7:15 or so and let it run for the "money quote."

Gee, how come it didn't go all 'splodey and such, Cletus?

osg said...

When he clears his weapon at 1:19, is that the sound of a live round landing on the carpet?

osg said...

Looking at the video again, it sure looks like a loaded mag he pulls out of his vest.

The stupid is strong in this one.

Oh my. Seems to me his method was more complicated than the "regulation" by-the-book method. I would imagine that in a real gunfight, supertrooper there wouldn't be able to retain his weapon quite as easily as he did in Mom's basement in the video.

I'll stick with my HK91 or my AR15.

Dunno- I don't make a habit of ejecting and dropping live rounds indoors ....or much of anywhere else....

It sure looked like live rounds in that mag, though they might be homemade dummies ....

Devynsdad said...

If he ever had to diddy mow it somewhere that D-ring on the back of his spiffy little vest would knock the shit outta him.

But I guess he needs the drag handle since in the time he is standing around fumbling for mags he will take multiple rounds to the chest.

Shrimp said...

Oh, but he makes those Iraqi reloads much rikki tik, so he should be alright.

I too love the Tapco Catalog remark. Glad I had just finished my Mug n Bug root beer or it would have been on the monitor.

Travis Haley, Former Magpul CEO, has a new AK video out (shameless plug: review over at my place) where he does a modified, more stable version of that reload. Basically it involves rolling the thumb over the dust cover and placing the buttstock in the waist area. It is about the only way I see that reload being somewhat usable.

Overall, just holding on the the short handle under lot of spring pressure as you try to force another mag out and then in is a really bad idea. It is guys trying to be tacticool Mall Ninja and make their AK in to an AR. It is an AK, run it like one. If you want an AR, don't cheap out on a low end AK.

FWIW, here is the original video on it with the Iraqi NCO and USMC encouraging him:

USMC dude probably realizes that at some point, he may have to go up against that particular hadji or another one that he passed the new technique onto. Of course he encouraged it. 8^)

Since I have a finite number of magazines, I usually practice a retention reload with my AK, although there's a time and place for knocking the old mag out with the new. I've always found it easier to reach under to work the carrier as in the "old" method that was demonstrated.

Dunno.. can a round go off if it lands on a carpet? And would anything except your eardrums be hurt?

Besides, where should one unload the chamber on a carry gun?

I prefer to let the round land on the duvet though.. haven't learned to catch it in flight so far..

Also, dropping magazines doesn't seem like a good idea. Aren't soldiers given just half a dozen, and doesn't replacement ammo come in stripper clips?

Maybe he should spend less time toying around with circus tricks and hit the gym. I'm honestly surprised he can support the weight of that rifle letalone the recoil.
He looks like an elf that's stolen a dwarf's beard and started wearing it as a joke...

Noah D for the comment section win:

I kept watching the (so aptly named) boogerhook inside the guard, thinking, 'pleasedon'tshootmepleasedon'tshootme...'

I suspect the Tacticool HaijiNinja Technique doesn't work so well when your hand is covered with sweat, blood, enough oil to keep SGT Mickey K's People Assault Carbine from rusting away (yes, Internet Commandos, AKs DO rust {g}), rain, or ditch water. . . ALL of which I seem to recall having on my boogerhooks at one time or another in _training_ environments. God help you trying it with gloves, especially cold weather ones. (Hmmm. . . maybe that's why it's not in the RUSSIAN manual of arms. . . ?)

To be perfectly honest, my preferred technique isn't as fast as this (when the Furry Gunjuggler here doesn't fumble it), but I don't recall EVER screwing it up so badly it cost me more than a minor gun bite.

It's rather simple -- left hand holds the gun without breaking grip(jamming butt into shoulder), right hand swaps mags, then right hand does a palm-up jerk on the charging handle, just like I was taught to run teh handle on an M60, M249, or M2HB to the rear. (You can also do it with palm facing you, fingers straight, like you're going to slap yourself in the nose - machs nichts.)

It ain't as cool looking as gunjuggling, and I'm sure Gabe Suarez disapproves, but _it_works_, it works _reliably_, it works on a wide variety of guns, and you're less likely to drop the damned gun. (With a gun with a portside charging handle, hold gun with right hand and load/charge with left - much like the modern AR technique.)

But, Hell, I'm so uncool that I figure any technique I can't do half asleep, hungover, with a sore hand, in the rain, is probably too complicated to do when a speed reload is essential. . .

Exactly. I also wonder how well it works when one is in the prone position or otherwise not standing perfectly still in the peaceful environment of one's living room.

maybe that's why it's not in the RUSSIAN manual of arms

Yep. Though, in all fairness, I've always gotten the idea that the Russian army has such a blase attitude toward its soldiers (the rifle is worth more than they are) that training consists of "the bullets come out this end; you can figure out the rest if you live long enough".

Come to think of it, the US Army didn't exactly spend much time teaching me how to do tacticool reloads with my M-16...

Geodkyt said...

True. I learned not to do an IPSC style speed reload in Basic, on our first run through of "React to Near Ambush". You wouldn't think a greyish-gold shiny 30-rounder could disappear in a thin scattering of pine needles, where you have a pretty good idea of the straight line you were moving on, but noooooooo. . . Friggin' aliens swooped down and ate the damned thing in under four minutes. . .

Luckily, I found an "orphan" magazine on another range a few days later, before having to face the wrath of my Drill Sergeant (Hell, I would have HAPPILY paid the $1.25 or whatever the USGI replacement cost was -- it wasn't like I was going broke with shopping sprees. {grin})
