Habit Forming.

Day... what is this, five? ...of bicycling in the AM. Does five days a habit make? Anyhow, got to get to Kroger to load up on over-caffeinated energy drinks while they're on sale!

More blogging when I get back; I even have ideas and such! In the meantime, check out a new blog from the Ministry of Nerd, or as it's known in Amsoc Newspeak: MININERD.

Supposedly it takes 2 weeks to make a habit... At least that's what they say...

I heard it was 21 days.

No kidding I heard from the government that "ONE CIGARETTE < insert drug du jour> CAN GET YOU HOOKED FOR life!"

I wish good habits were as easy to catch.

I smoked a whole pack, 20 years ago and have not felt any yearnings.

As long as you're going to Kroger, you might as well get some tickets

Habits: The Ripple, the Wave, the Tide.

The Tide is you have to exercise more to maintain the same fitness as you age.

The Wave is you have decided to exercise more (bike variety).

The Ripple is you wonder if 5 days is enough. Of course if you wonder if you have a habit, you don't have it yet.

Either you're a lying teasing wench or you're not back yet, meaning you're already hooked on the evil bike bug.

Don't let it win. Tear yourself off that seductive seat and get back to exercising eyeballs on gently glowing screens and fingers on ergonomic keyboards, dammit.

And last but not least, the neurons, lest they atrophy...

"Does five days a habit make? "

John Lyons in Lyons on Horses (a good horse training book, and a good read, too. The chapter on training trailer loading is worth reading, and thinking about. It works for me.) claims that once you get a horse to do a lesson correctly, it takes 50 successful repetitions to master the lesson.

I think that applies to people, too, from what I saw substitute school teaching.

Two weeks? 21 days? That might be merely training to learn the lesson, to learn the skill or activity. I would think at least 50 early rides later would be the time to wonder if a useful routine has become an actual habit.

On the other hand, if you don't intend, today, to change the early ride thing, then it is certainly your routine.

"I smoked a whole pack, 20 years ago and have not felt any yearnings."

That's funny, because I've never smoked a cigarette in my life, and was even raised as a Latter-day Saint...yet every so often, I yearn to light one up.

I have no idea where that yearning comes from, or why I have it.

Habits can be curious things indeed.
