Recoil therapy.

After brunch at the Aristocrat on Sunday, Shootin' Buddy and I went to Beech Grove Firearms to burn some powder on their slammin' new indoor range.

Okay, you can start speeding up a little bit, but watch that low & left.
I've been working on trying to be able to shoot strings of multiple rounds without getting carried away and mashing the trigger to make the gun go off Quick! Now! Because it's time! and instead letting the sight picture control the timing of the trigger press like I'm supposed to. It's hard not to get caught in the metronome of "BANGBANGBANGBANG!", and if you don't believe me, try doing it at the range and listen to the tempo of the people shooting around you.

I used 180 rounds from the Ruger 22/45 to chew the red center out of the target and then went to the Glock 19 and attempted to keep the bullets going through the existing hole, so any distinct 9mm holes you see there are misses (*cough*that tail down and to the left*cough*.) Still lovin' those I-Dot Pros.

After a hundred rounds of 9mm, sixty at three yards fired as quickly as I could get something like an adequate sight picture and press the trigger (that's where the little tail came from) and the other forty at five yards at a pace that let me get a good sight picture before pressing the trigger, the ammo budget for the day was reached and it was time to go.

I need some recoil therapy.

Have my Mark 1 that hasn't been to the range since I took my mom for her first time ever late last year.

Plus the Block has the Advantage 22 kit...and I have apparently the only supply of 22 in the nation available to fire since I, recalling '07, decided to plan ahead in case Mittens didn't pull off the win.

To be fair, it was a lot easier to make a pile of ammunition accumulate than disappear. It's not easy to get to a range more than every 2 months being a single papa...but I can dry fire. Lots.

If Mittens had somehow gotten the win...my plan was for a 22 "can". And some others. Now? From what I understand, the "Batmen" are taking a year or more to process that sort of thing which requires a Stamp.

I've fallen in lurv with "low left" so much that I'm thinking of mounting the targets down there....or maybe asking USPSA to add a low left lobe to the A zone.

I recognize my problem - I blow up the grip with each reload (S&W 625) and have to reassemble it from scratch, and the adrenaline drive gets me too much finger on the trigger, the rear of the grip frame too far into the base of the hand and then inconsistent pressure with the RH grip. So far, knowing what's causing it doesn't seem to be much help in fixing it. I need to find a Recoil Doctor....

Jerry M I'm not, never will be. At least I have access to 2 USPSA matches a month to see if I've learned anything in the intervening weeks.

Now if I could just find enough ammo to practice with....

That is a good looking range and target to boot!

I blame our crumbling infrastructure and those damn rich people's refusal to pay their fair share.

The shape of the target makes me want to break out the Arisaka 7.7 and flip out the aerial rear sight wings!

Yeah, I've been doing the "'X' number of 9mm or .45, then go to .22" thing too.

'Course, I've been doing that for a while anyway, this time of year my hands can only take so much .45.

I just clicked on your sight link; bleep, is EVERYTHING on backorder now?

Nice group. From what range?

I spent years chasing small groups like this 12 round, 7 yard one from my 2.5" 66.

Then in 2011 I discovered the IDPA game and now all I care about is how fast I can hit an 8 inch circle inside 20 yards.

Oops. Forgot the link to the group. Boss wanted me to actually earn my pay :)

Recoil therapy is good for what ails one!
Good for you!

I told the guy in the stall to your left it was your first time shooting ;-) He believed me for a nano-second.

We need to be a lot nicer to you.

Yes, everything is on backorder now. Even fishing gear for some damned reason. I've had a set of Scotty downriggers on order since Christmas and they are still on backorder with no estimated ship date.

As for recoil therapy, I just hoisted a post at my blog about how damned satisfying it is to hear that gong go off at 986 for the first time in a trip - no telling how many rounds it took for me to finally hit it (eight. It was eight rounds)but damn that's fun. And the recoil from a 300 winchester magnum provides a lot of therapy.

I've got my brother in law coming out this weekend and he wants to go do a round of sporting clays. I'm stoked, but also worried that I won't be able to find any ammunition to go...

Scott J,

"Nice group. From what range?"

It's in the post. ;)

But I did 60 rounds at three yards and 40 at five, in random strings of three to seven rounds.

I wasn't shooting for groups, I was trying to shoot them through the pre-existing hole from the .22 absolutely as fast as I could get a good enough sight picture.

On a second read I saw I'd missed the ranges.

For a flash sight picture that group is outstanding. I've had days I couldn't manage that with deliberate slow fire.

Tam,

what are those hangers made of? Is that cardboard? Not metal, at least.
Since I took a chunk of .22 in the face, from a beginner shooter two slots over, I've not been very happy to see those steel hangers at the local indoor ranges. One of the reasons I seldom go anymore. At this point, I only go if I need to function check some gun work.

Will,

"what are those hangers made of? Is that cardboard?"

Yup. It's a good setup.

Aim for the left nipple...

Do they let you draw and fire at that range?

Tam said...

Skip,

I believe so, but I'd have to double check.

None of the times I've shot there have I worked from the holster, though, so I'm not 100% sure.

NOOO.... DON'T SHOOT UP ALL THE AMMOOOOO..... MUST HOARD IT FOR THE COMING SNOWPOCALYPSE OR HEAT WAVE... (whichever comes first)

Looks pretty good. I'd say you're 'bout ready to take on the old geezers at the Bullseye events. Trigger control ain't no fluff job.

Yes, we allow drawing from the holster, but you need to step back a bit to avoid hitting the front of the shelf with your pistol.
