Got one of those in the safe. May be my most favorite rifle, ever. Thinking hard about a "C" stock for the critter.

In it's natural habitat, a shooting mat at a range. Yes, it has more realistic sights than the straight -03, but still, product-disimproved Mauser with target sights. But 'murican, so everyone loves it except me.

As the Col. (Cooper) once opined, "There ain't many problems a man can't fix, with $700. And a thirty-ought six....."

When I shot NRA Highpower I ran a heavily modified one of those.

Action bedded in Devcon. Lead shot epoxied into the slots in the stock and a cast iron pipe filled with shot to go into the storage in the butt. Romney trigger, Williams FP TK rear sight and a Lyman globe front.

I've since decided the globe front was too fragile and have reinstalled the GI front and hood.

Uh, that would be Timney trigger. Stupid auto correct.

The 03A3 is the LAST Mauser battle rifle intended to be issued to troops as a normal combat gun.

Rationalized production methodology, better sights, God's Own Cartridge; all win really.

I love mine, but it does let you know you've been shooting at the end of the day.

I would like to have one of these in my collection one day. Nice pic.

Awesome! Where's the like button? Thanks for getting a DSLR, Tam!

BTW, it's a common ErrorNet myth regarding the 1903 being a product-improved 98 (Gewehr98) Mauser. It's actually a hybrid of captured M93 Spanish Mausers from the Spanish-American War and Springfield's own U.S. Krag action. The prototype was actually shooting circa 1900...

Actually, that was a poem written by Col. Cooper's daughter, Lindy Cooper Wisdom.

Mine is one of my favorite guns.

We paid Mauser on patent violations for both the 93 and 96 pattern guns.

They rather nicely didn't hit us up for our violations from the Krag...

I have a 1943 Remington 03-A3 and it has the smoothest bolt operation of all my other bolt guns and that includes Mausers, a 1948 Mod 70, commercial Remingtons and a CZ.

Accurate, too.

Very nice.

I also had my re-activated Remington 03A3 out to the range for the first time today.

It reminded me to appreciate the greatest generation.

I have two 1903mk1s Both receivers made in Dec.1919 both re-barreled in 1942(114XXX in Sep. 115XXX in Nov.) both shoot better than I do. ---Ray

That's a beauty!
I have a 1944 03-A3 that was never issued. Came to me in near pristine condition after years of storage in cosmoline.
They're great guns!!
What fun you must be having!

IIRC, the Krag-Jorgensen is Norwegian. Also, I'm thinking the US had a licensing agreement with Norway to produce the US Krag.

We did indeed. And I've read it caused a huge amount of screaming that the US was using a foreign-designed rifle.

Ah, the 03-A3. Which caused me to buy a slip-on Limbsaver pad, and start shooting a lot more cast bullets. Wonderful shooter.

Having come to the '03-A3 after I'd owned a Garand for a while, I found I didn't quite care for it as much as, say, the Lee-Enfield.

Indeed.

Tam's post inspired me to bring mine to the range today.

17 rounds from it and 10 from a Win 94 in a plastic Ram Line stock and my right shoulder is grumbling at me.

How did I ever do those 88 round matches back in the day? I only had a surplus USMC heavy cotton coat too. Not one of those fancy Cordura or leather jobs.

I have more than one. The first (my first center-fire rifle) is a straight stock four-groove, that I would have as my "One-and-Only". Bought it from my Gunny for $200.
The USMC "sight hood" is a vital accessory. The others are just as good. One CMP-purchase has their replacement C-stock in lieu of the ugly scant-stock they had on the rifle.
Love 'em all...

That reminds me. I need to start saving up to get the sporterized 1903 I bought back into sort-of stock shape.
