If you still have the old machine, just copy the music folder of that old machine onto the removable hard drive. If you have iTunes set up to copy imported songs into the iTunes folder, when you drag that folder of older songs into iTunes, it will just copy all of the songs to the appropriate folders. Sort out the dupes afterwards. IIRC iTunes has an option to do that for you.
