The secret? it had been opened up by someone who didn't follow apple's injunction to _always_ replace the thermal compound on the heat sink, so it was turning itself off every few min. A nickle's worth of artic silver after I opened it up (and blew out the dust while I was there) and I've got a very usuable machine.jaeganhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02659511903864581666noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15907727.post-44668106065475345662008-07-26T14:54:00.000-04:002008-07-26T14:54:00.000-04:00I just built a hackintosh for well under a grand, ...I just built a hackintosh for well under a grand, with 4 gigs of RAM and a 3.2ghz dual core.

You could get your upgrade AND buy an iLamp.AnarchAngelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06447178964096399015noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15907727.post-13288532716830048822008-07-24T18:37:00.000-04:002008-07-24T18:37:00.000-04:00Kewl! Yellow Dog Linux runs incredibly fast on them, as does FreeBSD for RISC/PowerPC. The native OS is, of course, AIX, which ain't no slouch, either.

Regards,
Rabbit.Rabbithttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09924556230506190220noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15907727.post-78297011604558544322008-07-24T14:08:00.000-04:002008-07-24T14:08:00.000-04:00I don't supposed you'd like an iMac? I may upgrade my ram, but as anonymous said, 10.3 is the best, with tiger (10.4) being "OK" too. In a desktop, you can really upgrade quite easily, even processor wise. xlr8yourmac.com and newertech.com are a couple places to startexcitedVulcanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03515573935012370027noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15907727.post-75264912072716558422008-07-23T22:23:00.000-04:002008-07-23T22:23:00.000-04:00let's be blunt: 10.3 is the best os x to date (10....let's be blunt: 10.3 is the best os x to date (10.4 is okay too, I guess. mostly for software compatability). Who cares what apple says is obsolete? a G5 powermac is plenty fast, especially with 8 gig of ram (or more if you have a ddr2 version). If anything, I see this as a great chance to get a wonderful machine for less than it's worth.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15907727.post-82401676061637122632008-07-23T21:35:00.000-04:002008-07-23T21:35:00.000-04:00I've got a kidney, not too damaged by beer...I've got a kidney, not too damaged by beer...Tamhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07285540310465422476noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15907727.post-64446762516426591962008-07-23T21:33:00.000-04:002008-07-23T21:33:00.000-04:00I have a dual 2GHz G5 that I'd be willing to part ...I have a dual 2GHz G5 that I'd be willing to part with... :-)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15907727.post-67656880271987176082008-07-23T20:24:00.000-04:002008-07-23T20:24:00.000-04:00mmmm Lords of Magic, thanks for making me want to ...mmmm Lords of Magic, thanks for making me want to dig it up and reinstall :DAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
