All over 250 little tax stamps and a quick drive to Asheville.
I tell you what, I just loves me some gubbermints. (And by "love", I mean "wish a plague of disfiguring boils on...") You have to wonder, does the tax increase cover the operating expenses of the new geheimes staatspolizei they'll need to stake out every cross-border convenience store and supermarket?
(Don't get me started on what the Feds can do to you for misreading a ruler by 1/8"...)

ReplyDeleteEvery day we get the choice between slavery and rebellion. So far, everyone pretty OK with slavery.
I have to admit that I've been dubious about Tennessee ever since I was pulled over there in the mid-90's for the heinous crime of driving on the Interstate with a Texas license plate.
ReplyDeleteUp and down the highway, every car pulled over had a Texas license plate. I assume that they were doing this because of drug trafficking along the I 40 corridor. Freedom and civil rights be damned.
Overall, TN isn't bad. It's about on a par with GA or AL; better in some ways and worse in others. NC is the CA of the South.
ReplyDeleteYep.
ReplyDeleteFightin' that crime.
"NC is the CA of the South."
ReplyDeleteI hadn't really thought of it like that. But remind me to install Han Solo smuggling compartments in my car before the next time I visit Knoxville and have a hankering to smoke a lot on my trip.
Be happy it's only cigarrettes - NYS law requires New York Residents to remit to the state the difference in sales tax between their sales tax, and the sales tax of out of state purchases, including mailorder. To not do so is tax fraud, a felony. Nobody had ever heard of the law, until NYS revenue agents started collecting NY license plate numbers of the Ikea in Paramus, NJ, and issueing threatening letters.
ReplyDeleteThe Governor of NJ at the time - Christie Whitman issued a statement that any NY revenue agent at the time would be arrested and prosecuted.
And oh, $3/pack? Quit complaining - they're $9 here in New York, where real cigarette smuggling does go on.
htrn,
ReplyDeleteI remember when I came to the realization that New York wasn't really like the rest of America when I saw the looooooooong list of rules and regulations that the state has posted in every rest area. A little bit of the Vaterland in the land of the free.
Yeah, and most of those rules concern seperating you from your money.
ReplyDeleteAs for the Cigarrette tax stamp kerfluffle - it made me laugh. Cigarrettes up here are so expensive, Smuggling rings started up, using rental trucks to bring cheap cigarrettes down south, up to New York, and selling them to Bodegas - Here, a pack of smokes is $9.
