Normally, I just raked it enough to round it, as I had to get it into a helmet. A full rake-out took twenty minutes, and then I could use it like a cats whiskers to avoid objects like door frames! When I cut it in the latter '70s, my helmet size went from 7 3/8 to 6 7/8. Lot of hair!
