Boomsticks: One of my favorite funny pictures.

The War on Terror and the War on (Some) Drugs have combined into a perfect storm that, over the past years, has inundated law enforcement agencies across America with a tsunami of toys. From Detroit's shiny new panzerkampfwagen to St. Petersburg's M-16s, cops from sea to M-60-equipped-Zodiac-patrolled sea have hardware that would have brought tears to the eyes of an infantry company commander not two decades ago.

Troublesome thoughts from the Founding Fathers on the topic of standing armies aside, it would be nice to at least be able to take consolation in the fact that these are a well-trained (as well as well-equipped) elite who, as part of a solid and well-organized plan, are forming an impermeable barrier between ourselves and the barbarians beyond the gates.

Alas, there's always plenty of evidence to the contrary.

"I'm the only one professional enough to mount the $400 optic on my weapon backwards."

*Sigh*

I feel safer already. Can I have my tax dollars that were wasted on his "training" back? I'd like to use them to go to Thunder Ranch.

  1. When it comes to government spending and the whole guns-vs-butter debate, I bear in mind the wise words of PJ O'Rourke:"You can always turn an aircraft carrier into a youth recreation center, but you can't lob a reformed drug addict at a Soviet MiG."

That said, if our tax dollars are being spent to buy, in the words of the Joker, "all those wonderful toys", it might behoove us to invest at least a few bucks in teaching them how to use them, beyond "stick them with the pointy end". (Nerd props for anyone who identifies the book that line came from...)

(Granted, I am generally of the opinion that, as the bumper sticker says, "The perfect government would tax everyone one dollar a year and then spend it all on fireworks.")

  3. Hee hee! I love this picture. I love it on so many levels.

Like, what exactly is he holding onto his AR by? Is there some kind of 45 degree midgrip I need to know about? His mistake would be instantly obvious if he'd tried to look THRU the optic, so how does he know if the batteries are charged? Apparently function tests aren't a big whoop in the NYPD. Also note the lack of a backup iron sight. 243 x 0 makes a lot more sense now.

I guess we should be thankful that rule 3 is being observed.

  4. So does this mean that nobody in his department has their rifles sighted in? Cause even if that one installed backwards made it through the installation phase, nobody could have sighted it in. If he installed it himself, and didn't sight it in, it speaks badly of his skill and the department's training. If the armorer equipped all the rifles with these sights, they are probably all on backwards and none of them have been sighted in. I can imagine a bunch of untrained Al Qaeda standing 20 feet away from these uber-tactical cops, everybody shooting and nobody getting hit. Or, worse scenario, a handful of TRAINED Al Qaeda taking out an entire army of police because of a retarded armorer.

Maybe he's trying to shoot himself in the foot? That way Lee Paige won't be The Only One...

BTW, your capcha program word is:
    lorizn.
That sounds like some sort of medication for crazy people.

  6. He's gripping it by the magwell - you can see the mag poing out from under his forearm.

Hey, be thankful, he can't get his finger on the trigger like that.

All I have to say is that Billy Bob Militia may not be a highly trained professional, but at least he manages to both mount the sight correctly AND use it to hit a target.

Maybe we need to equip the militias rather than the police. At least they'd be putting the kit to good use and train with it, rather than just show it off for the neato factor.

  10. Pithy comments aside... most cops (and most other occaisional shooters) put too much crap on their rifles.

  11. I told my sister about this video, and she said this DEA guy is suing the people who put the video on the net because it ruined his career. Maybe he filed under some sort of People with Diabilities Act or some such. I suppose it IS worse than having cupcake photos of oneself in the Tuesday panties distributed to all and sundry, but it's a tough old world, innit?

  12. I'd love to just walk up to that guy and tell him "Hey Supercop, your sight's on backwards." but then again, I'd probably get arrested for talking about firearms in public (it is NYC after all, they'd probably think I'm a "Terrorist" for knowing anything about how an evil assault rifle functions.)

Apparently, he's not the only one who needs training. See below:

    Yup... good times.
