Huh?

We had an earthquake?

Shows you how much I've been paying attention.

I work in retail. My big goal right now is to survive long enough to drink myself into a stupor on Monday. They could have nuked DC and I wouldn't notice 'til December 26th...

  1. Thursday OKC had a 2.7. I'm leaving for there tomorrow. I'm kinda hoping there aren't more - I'd rather do tornadoes.

Yeah, I know 2.7 is nothing, but even so....

  2. We had a 4.9 in north Alabama in 2003; it broke some windows, knocked pictures off walls, and created a decent-sized sinkhole in the Fort Payne area. It woke me up. Had a surreal feeling, hard to explain.
Two years earlier we had a 3.9 in the Huntsville area.

  3. Out here on the Left Coast in 1991 we had a 7.1, 1992 we had a 7.2 and a 7.3. Now those are earthquakes! Imagine waking up from a dream feeling like you're in a moving car, and then slowly realizing you're at home in bed, but the sensation of motion is the same!

  4. God's punishing y'all. I recommend nuking Hollyweird; then the seven-point-somethings will probably stop. Iowa would probably be glad to lend you a few nukes for the job.

  5. In the late 70s, there was an earthquake in the Mississippi basin when my dad was driving across the newer bridge between Memphis and W Memphis AR. He thought something was seriously awry with the vehicle, but he and people on that bridge were probably some of the few who even noticed the tremor. Most people don't realize there's a deep and evil fault line through there, because it acts up so rarely. Then again, it makes sense that San Andreas rates among the myriad Californians who get lots of press for bad behavior.

  6. Tellico Plains? We've been seeing a lot of Eric Estrada infomercials lately in FL, hawking home site in Tellico Something in TN. Same place?

RE: Not noticing if DC was nuked...what's December 26th got to do with anything?

  7. Yeah, just wait until the New Madrid fault lets loose a windy. You'll feel it then.

For that matter, we'll feel it in Dallas.

    Rabbit.

  8. Yep. Seismologists believe that the strongest North American earthquake in recorded history originated at the New madrid faultline back in 1811/1812, possibly topping 9.0 on the Richter scale.

When (not if) the NMSZ lets loose again in that order of magnitude, Memphis is going to be farmland once again, overnight.
