Politics: Read my lips...

Chavez to U.S.: 'Go to hell, gringos!'

Tam to Chavez: 'You know why your buddy Castro's been in power for so long? Cuba doesn't have oil. Sleep tight, Pugsley.'

  1. yeeah... because your country throwing its weight around to bully any nearby little country that might have something we want is a such great idea. just great.

  2. First off, I'm not offering up moral commentary; merely stating what will happen. (...and while I'm rarely pleased by interventionism, I also have a hard time working up tears for collectivist dictators.)

Second, Nicaragua doesn't have something the US wants; it has something the US needs.

Lastly, threatening to take the meat away from the lion isn't the brightest idea when you're actually in the cage with it. You'd think that Chavez would have a copy of that "Friendly Dictators" deck and carefully note how most came to power...

...Or note how, or more importantly who, ousted at least a few of them from power, in one way or another.

I actually like Chavez spouting his invective like he does. It gives me something to laugh about.

  4. well, Chavez actually survived the first attempt at removing him already; seems like that's gone to his head, now -- he didn't use to talk quite this unhinged.

(unlike most of the friendly dictators, he actually seemed to be doing some good for his country when he first got started. it's unlikely somebody as far gone as he seems to be now can keep that up.)

other than that, one slight nitpick: you mean Venezuela, not Nicaragua. not enough coffee yet this morning?

  5. D'oh!

I had the "Friendly Dictators" thing open in another window, and was perusing and typing at the same time.

Of course, there's also the option that I'm just another dumb red-state hick who can't tell all them Mexican countries apart, right? ;)

  6. By and large, I think Chavez believes he won't be called to task for his commentaries. He uses the rhetoric to drum up support at home, in the usual fashion of creating an outside enemy.

It's pretty much a necessity, given how he's already created a large downturn in the Venezuelan economy, with worse to come.

Says the wiener in the little country.

Chavez amuses me. He reminds me of a bullfrog.

  9. Cindy likes him.

We all know that only she has the moral authority to pass judgment on Pres for Life Chavez.

  10. All I know is that that *$$hole is one of the reasons that the cost of 7.62 x 39 fodder has gone through the roof.

And that is all I need to know about him.

  11. Not counting stoning Nixon, for which they are unlikely to be held currently accountable, the Venezuelans have "nationalized" (seized) "their" oil industry twice before, in the 60's and in the 70's. Even as a Sunoco stockholder, I've got to wonder why any gringo would go to hell for a third time. Watch for somebody doing a Francisco D'Anconia on their way out.
