Today is the day that everyone in the country gets all excited about a bunch of grown men in tights patting each other on the butt and getting in big sweaty piles on the ground.
Today is the day that I look forward to being able to go to any restaurant I like after work, with no fear of a line.
And tomorrow there'll be some cool commercials on YouTube.
So true! Although I'm a man, I've never seen the big attraction-- heck, WORSHIP--of spectator sports. Sports are something you do, not watch, and that includes the shooting sports, with the possible exception of trick shooting.

Come on now, that's a little ridiculous. The Super Bowl is a part of American culture, especially if (like me) your team is one of the two contestants.
ReplyDeleteI mean, how often do you get to watch people that are in peak physical condition perform at such a high level of athleticism?
Right now, Indianapolis as a city is more united than I have ever seen. People are actually being nicer to people because the Colts are in the Super Bowl. It's actually quite refreshing for a couple of weeks to not hear the usual doom-and-gloom on the news.
Wait...does this mean you also don't cotton to SEC football?
ReplyDeleteI'm with you, I really don't understand the attraction of watching a bunch of grown men pound the crap out of each other and then wander aimlessly for awhile after everytime the ball hits the ground.
ReplyDeleteeverytime I see a football field, I think "What a waste of a good trap range".
ReplyDeleteAnd don't even get me started on golf courses. The 9th tee should be "el Presedente" ... not some mowed circle with a plastic lined hole in the center. I mean, how much skill does it take to shoot a 3" diameter hole in the ground from 10 yards?
And those damned sandy spots are too small to properly back stop even the smallest target.
WHat with everythign else goign on, the funeral and all that and this damn head-cold I forgot that there even was a game - wake me up when its over, or not, I don't care.
ReplyDeleteFor some reason, I've never seen a Superbowl.
ReplyDeleteAs I grew up, my family didn't go in for spectator sports. You either played or you didn't bother.
In college, it was always one thing after another, like studying, or grading physics tests, the the pursuit of happiness with regards to the opportunities that the opposite gender could provide.
After college was military service, so either we didn't get the Superbowl in the country where I was, or I was deployed in a two man team and we couldn't spare either the sleep or the duty time. After a while I hadn't bothered to attach the TV to anything other than a VCR or a DVD player.
And now I can post to someone else's blog and browse teh intarweb. Why do I want to watch live TV, on someone else's terms, when I could DVR it and fast-forward through the football so I can see the commercials?
Tam, Slightly OT, but since you mentioned going out to a restaurant. The first major date my now-wife and I had was on the night before Thansgiving. Having parked cars, high school and college, for a very fine restaurant, I knew what we'd find -empty tables and lots of service. The worst day: Mothers' Day. Oh, happy birthday. OldeForce
ReplyDeleteIt was a great evening to run out to Barnes and Noble. Easy Parking and about a 1:1 employee customer ratio.
ReplyDeleteI just go the SB parties for the food and the beer. Both were good this year! (Well the beer was OK - all I brought was AmberBoch.... but the Anheuser-Busch Company is a big friend to the 2nd Amendment.)
ReplyDeleteHam and cheese and bread, cheese and crackers, steak cubes, artichoke hearts, wings, veggies and dip, and desert. Yum.
The football was football. (This is the 2nd game I saw this year. The first was by accident.) Prince was ridiculous. The ads were below average.
I always love going to the cinema during the Superbowl. No lines for popcorn- my favorite seat is always waiting for me, and I love having all that space to myself. No pesky chatterers or cell phone weenies to disrupt the picture.
ReplyDeleteNever could get interested in watching football. Basically, a bunch of big guys bend over, then they kick a dead pig across a lawn. And they do it for 4 hours...
ReplyDeleteI proudly do not even know the teams playing. Nor did I know until Friday that the game was even on.
ReplyDeleteThough I did hear a good quote. "I wouldn't cheer for Alabama if they were playing the Russians."
Of course it was a U. T. fan, so I didn't tell him he should update to Al Quaeda. I suppose he's a history major, most of them probably think we're still fighting the Spanish over that Maine explosion.
