News: "Whoah, dude, cool it with the hose!"

It seems that 35 Texas firefighters will get to skip their drug tests this time around. There are complaints that the guys from truck 922 were bogarting the smoke column.

  1. I would hope that they remain subject to the standard testing policy, with a temporary dispensation for THC. Two reasons. One is that given a pass they may be tempted to indulge in other substances more likely to impair their actual performance, and the other would be to determine whether the second-hand smoke actually shows up in the test.

There was a case some years back wherein a schoolbus driver claimed that he tested positive because he couldn't stop the high school students from toking up on the bus.

  4. Soon as I saw that one, I told a buddy at work that firefighters were coming from five neighboring counties to help. Damn, I hope none of them, in their haste to put out the fire, neglected to ensure they had a good face-to-mask seal!

  5. 20 years back, a good-ole-sheriff buddy of my dad's in NC got "seconded" to the DEA for a pot offensive. He had to put in a lot of OT uprooting and burning whole fields that were spotted from the air. He said it was great fun and a good joke the first few weeks, but it got old fast. The weed soaked into his hands and stained them green, and folks wouldn't sit next to him in church, reeking of the stuff. A lite-beer guy, he didn't really enjoy being stoned off his gourd almost every evening when he got off work. He was glad when the assignment was over. Imagine that.
