He said it poorly, but there's actually a reason to differentiate between famous folks and non-famous folk.
Here in the U.S., "Public Figures," who have thrust themselves into the public limelight, have fewer rights to privacy, with regard to news releases on them. The spokesman may well have said, "I can't tell you about anyone involved in the accident."
But of course, that wouldn't have appeased reporters who just wanted to know if they could put someone's famous name in bold in their articles, stories, and sidebars.
I thought he meant, "Y'all can relax, there weren't any cops or fireman so we won't shut down traffic for two days while we hold a parade in honor of their heroic sacrifice."
Is Cruise out on a limb here, trying to prove Hitler was not a Scientologist? Let's presume Godwin's Law cannot be invoked for WWII movies...

They were probably just "extras". By definition, you won't miss 'em if you lose a few extras.
