After having lived in Atlanta for 4.5 years, I really do miss it. Of course, it is one of the five or so metropolitan areas I have lived in that I actually do miss... Could have something to do with me never driving, and only using MARTA, though ;).
Meh, I hated 285 any time of the day or night and 75 & 85 had their particularly bright moments when some unfortunate wrecked and locked down both sides because of gaper lock. I'll never forget the time I was on 85 and a moron with a backhoe dropped the 50 KV lines across all the lanes by the Steve Reynolds Parkway/Gwinnette Mall area. That was good for a 2+ hour sit till traffic got rerouted up the exit ramps
Yes, I miss certain things about Atlanta but they aren't enough to lure me back.
If I had a nickel for every time I got off 285 only to find that long narrow and completely sold-out parking-lot winding its way around the curve to 85N at Spaghetti Junction... running all the way up to the 316 split, at about seven miles an hour.
We're talkin' murder.
Aside from all that: in a million little ways, Atlanta began to feel like the east coast's answer to L.A. before the turn of the century.
Last gig we played in Atlanta (this one) we didn't make our set time, because apparently it now takes over six hours to get there from Charlotte, thanks to the jam-ups that start on 85 at about Braselton and continue all the way to downtown. Luckily, when I lived there, it was in Cabbagetown, and I mostly hung out in Little Five, so I didn't get stuck in that jive too often back then.

ReplyDeleteAnd Atlanta misses you! :)
ReplyDeleteYou made the right choice whenever you left, though. It gets worse and worse...

"That's about enough," I sez...
