Rust never sleeps...

Courtesy of Grant Cunningham, self-professed alpha geek by virtue of his Ham license, I've seen pictures of what may be the coolest decaying outdoor technological artifact I've yet laid eyes on. Can you imagine wandering around there? Think how much fun it would be climbing those gigantor tripod-shaped antennae! Think about Soviet building codes! Think about staying on the ground.

The post also contained the creepiest picture. I don't know what it is about that scene that gives me the creeping willies like it does; it's just uncanny.

  1. I also found that picture creepy. I think it's because at first glance it looks like a double exposure, and a pretty clumsy one at that. But you can't find any seams or other evidence of the trickery you "know" must have taken place.

  2. Do a search for Russian Woodpecker.

I got my license too late to experience that one firsthand.

  3. Sure it's cool, but does it get HBO?

  4. The creepy pic reminds me of the Oklahoma City memorial.

  5. I'll take a stab at analyzing what's creepy about that picture.

This is Russia, where people were known to steal burned-out lightbulbs in order to have them replaced with functional light bulgs.

And here's a veritable sea of perfectly good chairs, left untouched for years.

    How is that possible?

One of two things, and they're possibly related:

    1. The area is so remote that people didn't know it was there; or
    2. It was in an area where people died for trespassing.

    Just my $0.02...

  6. this is an abandoned outdoor theater in the middle of Moscow's grandest exhibition park! The area was off-limits since the Fifties (for some strange reason) and extends into a small forest. Forest seems to have won...

  7. Oh, man... Quick: hand me down me trusty Troll Mk. VII climbing rig. The steel carbiners, not the aluminum. Two hundred feet of static line and an 8. I'll have Span-Sets, please: two three-footers and a six, and an assortment of runners. That oughta do it. I'll see ya later.

  9. Okay, looks like I just found my locations when it comes time to film Zombiepocalypse: The Movie.

    Or something like that anyway.

  10. So with such actual structures in evident decay, here is a proof that "Post-Apocalyptic" isn't just a fictionalized genre, it actually exists and it evidently happened in Russia. :-)
We've got a 150-foot dish up on the hill above Stanford in better condition that they're going to Stan-Fu and dismantle/demolish. Here's a petition to preserve and NOT destroy it.

  11. Far out: I found Peter (bayourenaissanceman) via DRB, then AD, then Xavier, then you, and now here we are back at the start. I guess the world wide web isn't as big as I thought?
