Ah. I see. A bit of googling tells me that IFB is 29 chapters of material that take place prior to PotF, and then he tacks the entirety of PotF on to the end. Meh. Maybe not. I was kind of hoping for more of what happened to them after PotF. Ah well.

ReplyDeleteBut I do expect a post later on Chuck Yeager and the X-1. Mostly just so I can write a comment back that I personally have been higher and faster than any man alive. And then I'll throw out the punchline that no, I'm not a pilot, I was just talking about drinking and pillowing the other evening.
At which point the house band in my head will offer up the appropriate snare and cymbal punctuation.
IMHO, not his best. OTOH, "not his best" is miles ahead of some other stuff I've read. Worth the read, at any rate. (Not just damning with faint praise, it is good; he's just capable of better

As for his best? Honoverse is very good, but I slightly prefer Ashes of Empire or the March series...
Oh, I'm sure I'll pick it up eventually.

ReplyDeleteThat's funny... I'm at home, trying to stay off an injured knee this weekend, and have just discovered the joys of Baen e-books. No more cramp in my fingers from holding the book, no more waiting for the UPS truck, no more going to the library! For $6 I can have what I want, right now. I can even read the first couple of chapters to make sure I like it before forking over my cash. It's fantastic. I've read two of John Ringo's books far into the night. With my laptop I could even take them out to my porch.

One of the many great books from one of my favoritest authors.
ReplyDeleteWhile most of the new content is prior to the events of 'Path of the Fury,' there is at least one new scene, and several minor edits to the previous story also, most important of which is an additional scene in the final chapter.
On the matter of 'the continuing adventures of the mind reading super-soldier with her own sentient spaceship,' Weber himself has commented to the effect that the characters are rather too fully established in their power to make interesting stories possible.
Plus, given the number of other commitments on his plate, between the now 3 Honorverse series, Bahzell, Prince Roger (4 more), some more Bolo books, and a new series with someone else, turning one of his remaining standalone novels into a continuing series is probably pretty low on the priority list. (or at least it bloody well better be, I'm already waiting long enough for the next book in each of these series.)
That book is sitting on the dresser staring at me, but I have to finish Robert Jordan's Knife of Dreams book 11 in the Wheel of Time series. Then Mr Weber and I will get reacquainted.

In Fury Born is an updating of Path of the Fury. The first 2/3 were OK then he jumped off the deep end.
ReplyDeletebscriptions is teh awesome. I've blown quite a bit of money on that over the years.
ReplyDeletePlease note that quite a lot of Baen material is available free and legal via either the free library or via the CDs that have been bound into first printings.
That having been said, by all means spend more money at webscriptions - it proves there is a market for non-DRM'd ebooks (and I won't pay money for DRM ebooks).
Hah! I checked it out from the library yesterday! Since Dave won't give us more Harrington for the time being, I'm hoping this one fills the jones.
