In any case, I'm just glad somebody, anybody stopped this lunatic. Sure, it would've been more damaging to the antis if it was just a regular worshipper and not a member of the "security staff," but the whole thing could have been a lot, lot worse. Bravo to Ms. Assam.
I am interested by the way in which she is both a standard, Jane Citizen/CCW responder, and someone with professional training.
Viz., she is reported to have worn the blue and carried the badge in Minneapolis during the '90's, but left the force for reasons unknown. (Check out Insty, or Dave Hardy.)
Also, she is apparently part of the organizing team for the volunteer watch on the church premises during service.
As stated, she had a CCW permit, had trained, and quite probably outdid her fellow armed-volunteers in her courage and accuracy of fire.
The right woman, in the right place at the right time. Armed.
This kind of chain is often presented as being more than a coincidence, as if Someone Upstairs suddenly woke up and decided to make sure that this particular situation ended well.
I don't know if I will hold to that opinion myself; I do know that this event shows the superiority of active citizens in providing safety for friends, family, and organizations.
A gun in the hand (with requisite practice) is worth a cop on the phone.
Wow.. ouch. Not that unusual at the larger churches apparently. Ours has organized volunteers for the same purpose for some time, albeit only from local or state LEOs. When I asked the fellow who managed that team if he wanted it public, he said absolutely.
I'd love to have the MSM cover the BIG story, that of the courage & preparedness of Ms. Assam, but sadly, I don't think we'll live long enough to see it.
Meanwhile, she has appeared extensively on Colorado Springs television news and was on the ABC national news tonight, recounting her experience. (She looks exhausted, frankly.)
That does not mean that I don't get tired of the way that local TV stations ride the story into the ground. It's a good thing that we had a snowstorm to divert their attention.
Phlegmfatle-she put him down with hits to both legs, an arm and two of his guns (body armor? or did he have so many magazines strapped to his body that they acted as such?). And he, as is typical with these cowards, took himself out when he realized he was facing opposition stiffer than "I called 911!"
I think we may safely assume he converted in his last moments, having seen the fateful lightning of the terrible swift sword up close and personal.
What, nobody made the piece? A certain somebody ought to be up to her combat stance in manufacturer's endorsement offers about now, if there's any justice. A Milius/Frank Miller movie deal: the Death Triangle's version of the Wheaties box. Now with evangelical approval!
And they are also avoiding mention that she asked for God to be with her as she moved to the sound of the guns, not quite alone. Courage exemplified.
ReplyDeleteTo be fair, the church officials themselves characterized her as a "security guard" or "security staff" and emphasized her former experience as a LEO:

She is a volunteer guard. She has had experience as a LEO (past tense), but she was acting as a private citizen licensed to carry a concealed weapon.
ReplyDeleteHer two male counterparts it appears froze up, drew but couldn't or wouldn't shoot

Glad some choose to do it.
Sad for the necessity.
I would normally have some snark but all I can say is WOW!
ReplyDeleteMoving towards the shooter while being fired upon. 2X as impressive.
Again, WOW!
The MSM have been fast to point out her feet of clay from her 1997 firing, I see.
ReplyDeleteNo hero unbroken, I suppose.
Regards,
Rabbit.
Funny how I came to the same conclusion.

ReplyDeleteKudos to the brave lady sheepdog.
doubletrouble and rabbit,
ReplyDeleteHere in Colorado it's the bloggers pointing out Jeanne Assam's past cop-job troubles.

...and now they are saying the mortal shot was self-inflicted?
ReplyDeleteAfter a 3 day fast, I doubt I would be walking steady, let alone shooting well.

Having read the linked bit about her "cop troubles," I like her all the better. Who hasn't wanted to swear at a bus driver?
