Mausers and Mosins and Smiths, Oh My!

My apologies for the vast expanse of nothing on my blog today. I will be spending the day huffing Butch's Gun Oil fumes and wiping everything in the museum down. They'd gotten a lick and a promise during unloading, but they need a good slathering for storage. You don't realize how much stuff there is until you have to oil it...

  1. butch's is good stuff. Still, I consider Hoppe's #9 to be an aphrodisiac. A dab behind each ear...

I'd forgotten you live in Indy. Might have to meet you at the range sometime. And get my ass handed to me, figuratively, of course. But still.

  2. Kinda partial to Breakfree CLP myself, but I keep a bottle of Hoppe's open nearby, just for the fragrance. Memo to Self: Hoppe's-scented candles!

  3. Fun to move the herd, isn't it?

I just took most of the bunch to a friends for secure storage.
Took a few trips up and down the stairs.... and took a while to make a list. Actually, it was kinda fun to see so many laid out and realize they are all MINE.

I like Ballistol..... it can even be used as a wound dressing :-)

  4. I can't seem to find ballistol. have heard it's quite useful for the smoke poles. Well, ok it's an 1858, but it's quite smoky.

I typically use Break-Free on the rest, including the steel. Oddly enough, had some of that special sword oil, and it smelled and looked just like break-free.

  5. The problem with CLP for long-term storage is that the "Cleaner" is volatile and can degrade the effectiveness of the "Protectant" over time. I like CLP for regular usage, but for storage, a wipedown with RIG or Butch's is the way to go.

    Try http://www.firehawktech.com/v/
    vspfiles/V4_Backup/b%5Esources.asp
    for a retailer near you.

Try: http://www.firehawktech.com for more information than you ever wanted to know about it.

Or, you might try one of those ee-vil gun shows; it's usually between the anti-tank rocket and the nuclear .50BMG dealers.

I use it for long-term storage, but I'm not wild about the smell. If I ever find a woman that puts a touch of Hoppe's No. 9 behind the ear, I might consider committing matrimony again.

  7. CLP is a good general product but it does not remove copper fouling very well; try leaving a drop of CLP on a penny overnight. And the Garand gets Lubriplate, for old times' sake.
