Note To Self:
Get paint markers and mark 6.8 AR mags so that they can be told apart from 5.56 mags at a glance. You know, like you promised yourself you'd do about a year ago...
In my town, we have a recycling center for those who like to use such things. One of the thinhs recycled is paint. The paint is deposited in a trailer, which is hauled off bi weekly to the actual landfill or wherever.
That trailer is a gold mine for free paint, paint thinner, stripper, varnish, and so forth. You won't believe the perfectly good, often unopened things people toss.
Label makers are the deal for this. Clear labels with black letters. They don't stand out much (a bit shiny) and can also carry load info.
When I load a magazine with my hand loads it gets marked as to load data (unless I am at the range). Just a sticker that stays put, till peeled away on purpose. Works like a charm.
All my 6.8 mags have a brown follower. Isn't that standard? I had to do some developmental stuff at work (yes, I shoot machine guns for a living) and I ended up I.D.ing the floorplates with whiteout and giving them a quick shot of clear laquer. Each ran abot a buck at the dollar store around the corner.
Yes, the 6.8 followers are a sort of burgundy color, while all my AR mags have tan or gray MagPul followers, but a big fat tan or gray stripe around the body of the 6.8 mag would be the hot ticket, I think...
I drew big fat arrows with a silver ink-marker on each side of mine, pointing forward so I know which way to load them. :-) They are hidden by the magwell when inserted though.
Tam: Go to the hardware store and invest in 3M colored electrical tape. Put a ring of the color of your choice around the lower part of the mag and then around the trigger guard in front of the trigger. That way you match the mag to the gun. It also helps you identify your gun when it is in a rack at a training event and you can find it!
If you want to dedicate a magazine to a different gun....change the tape.
Here's a tip, "get paint" made me think of it.

Maybe textured paint so you can tell them apart by daylight (color) and nighttime (feel)

ReplyDeleteGet a roll of grip/stick tape. Choose a color.
Wrap a band or two around the lower part of the mag. Gives good grip, and in the darker colors blends right in.
My mags with the .22 conversions in them have black tape. The 5.56 mags have black magpuls and the 6.8 mags have tan magpuls.
