Riddle me this...

How come Tom Cruise is a placenta-munching freak, but Will Smith gets a total pass even though he too believes in Cylons or Leptons or whatever the hell it is you can get out of your system by holding an electric soup can?

(Personally, I think it's because Will is, by all reports, a nice guy, and it's easy to tolerate an eccentric belief or two in a nice guy. Tom, however, is somewhat short on redeeming characteristics to make up for his belief in extraterrestrial Boeings.)

  1. I'm in the minority here -- I think Will Smith is a bit obnoxious. $cientology just makes him more so.

Then again, he's not actively pimping Xenu, so....

  2. "Tom, however, is somewhat short..."

    Leprechaunish, actually.

  3. Unless I've just missed seeing it, Will Smith doesn't go around shoving his faith in other people's faces.

If someone doesn't hurt other people and doesn't try to push his mythology on me against my will then I don't have any problem with him. That holds true for those who believe in aliens or those who engage in ritual worship of a medieval torture device and believe in zombie saviors.

  4. Tam, a bit off topic, I didn't know how to send this link to you so I'm just going to post it here.

I think you'll get a laugh out of it.

  5. Besides being generally goofy and a bit nuts, what exactly have the scientologists done wrong?

Not a trick question, I really don't know.

Yeah they're odd, yeah some are preachy as hell. So long as they leave me alone and don't hurt anybody, I'm fine with whatever they're up to...

  6. I thought Will Smith said that while Cruise has talked to him about scientology and the mighty xenu, and they discussed the topic at length, he really wasn't one. Did I miss his extraterrestrial conversion?

  7. weer'd beard: Scientology has a fairly long history of harassing opponents. There is a Scientology "doctrine" called "Fair Game".

ENEMY — SP Order. Fair game. May be deprived of property or injured by any means by any Scientologist without any discipline of the Scientologist. May be tricked, sued or lied to or destroyed.

There are many many other things they've done, but that's a good start. Google "Lisa McPherson".

  8. Will Smith never made Brooke Shields cry. That's why we like him better.

  9. perlhagr,
So they're just like Islam or any other organized religion.

Christians don't openly state it anymore, but some sects still practice that behaviour. Islam openly states it.

Honestly, I am not sure of Buddhism etc... However, in practice I doubt it's more than a semantic difference due to the dislike of round eyes.

    ::shrugging::

I just ignore them like I do the krishnas, mormons and jehovas witnesses.

(I was about to use witless instead of witness, but they are honestly no worse than many others)

  10. Could be because he's not as open or as annoying about it. Hell, I didn't even know he was a Scientologist until this post...

The entire religion is a fraud, literally. It was set up by its founder (his name escapes me at the moment) as a pyramid scheme disguised as a religion so that he wouldn't go to jail. The guy is even quoted as saying so.

  11. I think its because Will Smith KILLS aliens; Tom Cruise would just hop up and down on their couch.

  12. The entire religion is a fraud, literally.

That is redundant in that while not all frauds are religions, it is the case that all religions are frauds, literally.
