Well, that was gross.

Do you know how much funk can accumulate inside a keyboard in five years? I should have put it in a ziploc bag and sold it to an allergen lab; there must have been enough cat hair to kill a dozen asthmatics.

On the upside: My Logitech now sounds as loud and clicky as an IBM Model M compared to thirty minutes ago.

  1. Keyboards are cheap. Trash cans are plentiful. Just toss those things (keyboards, mice) in the trash every six months or so and move on.

  2. I still have my Model M, and its still the easiest keyboard I have to clean... just take out to the back porch and hang it over the rail and beat it with a broom. Dang things are near indestructible.

The other way to keep your keyboard clean is this.

  3. I love my Model M. It collects nastiness (cat hair and food mostly) far too easily, but there's just something about a keyboard that could also double as a bludgeon.

  4. Cat and dog hair are my laptop keyboard's worst enemies. That, and I tend to spit soda across the keyboard reading Phlegmmy's and Lucrative Pain's blogs ...

So I invested in a keyboard cover. They're surprisingly hard to find for laptops but damn, I love that thing.

Also has the added bonus that I can still read the letters on my keys - after 2 years of nearly daily use, that's saying something.

  5. The IBM Model M is the one true keyboard. Accept no substitutes. What other keyboard can be used to crush a zombie's skull and then carry right on typing?

  7. Do what I do. I pop off all the keys, take out the printed circuit board and rinse out all the keyboard parts, circuit board and all, under warm running water. Then I dry it all off and put it all back together again. Usually takes about 3 hours, which is about how long it takes me to clean my AR-15 :)

  8. After reading about the unicomp keyboards here about half a year or so ago (maybe longer), I ordered one to try it out. Great stuff, so I ordered 8 more. I now have them on all of my computers even the ones at work.

There is nothing like the unicomp/model M keyboards for feel and yes they are very very easy to clean.

Thanks for the tip by the way. I had been looking for new ones ever since I gave my my IBM AT.
