Ripping right along.
Yet another stack at my elbow today. As there was yesterday. And the day before. And the day before that...
Good choice on the Crash Test Dummies. Don't see that too often on folks playlists.
ReplyDeleteYou're ripping my High School soundtrack...
ReplyDelete(Wait, it's UN-hip to like the 'CTD'?)
MMMmmmm MMMmmmmm mmm-mmm...
ReplyDeleteI liked "In The Days of The Caveman"
ReplyDeleteHow could Crash Test Dummies be unhip when they sucked up to David Byrne?
ReplyDeleteI just can't listen to an entire CD by Crash Test Dummies... that low voice gets to me after a while. At least it does on God Shuffled His Feet.... Never bought another.
ReplyDeleteDecent material, as usual.
ReplyDeleteI got no prob with Trent, have bought a couple of his records. But he is definitely the emo Skinny Puppy. (Until SP themselves went emo. Still, it was a good run until then.)
Nutting wrong with Crash Test Dummies.
ReplyDeleteSounds like you've got NIN pretty well covered, too. I'd throw in Broken and Fixed, too, for good measure. Oh, and there's a couple albums available to download from the NIN website (for the always acceptable low, low price of free) that are cool.
But Trent is emo?!?! I think not. That's like saying Nirvana was metal.
Dressing in all black does not the emo kid make.

The reason that there's so much backlash against Crash Test Dummies is that they were overplayed and then played some more and then played right into the ground in the early '90s. Brad Roberts has one of the all time distinctive voices that you can recognize in two notes, like Johnny Cash, David Bourne, Billie Holiday, Kate Pierson, Iris DeMent, Sting, and Louis Armstrong, to name a few.
ReplyDeleteDunno about NIN - at some point they eclipsed The Cure as inspiration for badly written teen suicide notes.
ReplyDeleteI can't say that NIN meets the "dictionary definition" of emo, but for music of depression and self-loathing, Trent pegs the meter. In fact, after loving Pretty Hate Machine so much -- it's a very good album -- I was disappointed with Broken. It just seemed like he figured out that depression and self-loathing and darkness sold, so he pegged the meter intentionally.
ReplyDeleteIt doesn’t surprise me that you get the most comments regarding the mainstream bands on the list. IMHO the most interesting CD on the list is “Belly – Star” which is not in most people’s collection. I would recommend for this genre Belly – King, The Breeders – POD, and the Pixies – Doolittle
