On this day in:
1790: The Revenue Cutter Service was formed. Obviously, sea-going tax cops were less than popular in America, so they added fishing drowning people out of the drink to their portfolio and changed their name to the U.S. Coast Guard.
1892: Lizzie Borden's parents came down with a mysterious fatal case of axeitis. Popery suspected.
1916: Liberia declares war on Germany.
1917: Germany notices.
1944: A Dutch collaborator finks out the Frank family to the Nazis.
1964: LBJ goes on TeeVee to complain about events that may or may not have occurred allegedly near the purported Gulf of Tonkin, on or about the last couple of days, and says we should bomb the crap out of North Vietnam.
1977: Jimmy Carter, figuring that lack of government is the reason that the economy's in the crapper and energy costs too much, signs into existence a whole new federal Department of Energy. Because more government always helps.

ReplyDeleteWhen the last time a Federal Dept actually got signed out of existence - rather than merged but not losing any people.
Lizzie Borden had an axe
ReplyDeletegave her mother forty whacks
when she saw what she had done
she gave her father forty one
Nothing in there about popery or potpourri, though she could have been smoking some...
Careful, you might sprain your snarkious maximus muscle. That's a lot of snark in one post. The Jimmeh one just lol'ed me like nuts.
ReplyDeleteYeah, but we didn't add the whole "rescuing idiots" and the name change until 1913.
ReplyDeleteI meant 1915, not 1913.
ReplyDelete1977: Los Alamos National Labs handed over from the Department of Defense to the Department of Energy.
ReplyDeleteChange in security mindset follows generationally...
And the Department of Energy has accomplished, ...
ReplyDelete...
...
... someone please help me here. What have they done?
dr. strangegun: Maybe you should look into why Lizzie was acquitted. (Although possibly it's just that she threw herself on the mercy of the court as an orphan. 8-)
