Preparing for the Zombocalypse...

It's important to prep for the scenarios you think you might face. I'm not sure if Zombie Bob is kin to Rob Zombie, but I am all spun up for the dance, just in case. I feel bad about those two dropped shots with the Para LTC9...

PS: Why do targets put the A-Zone on the noggin above the eyebrows? Is the objective to impede the target's ability to do vector calculus or appreciate Shakespearean sonnets?

PPS: The rear sight on the Marlin Papoose is all broke-dick. Whoever spec'ed that folding rear leaf should be run out of town on a rail...

  1. As students of All Things Zombie know, the only way to kill a zombie is to destroy the head--thus the odd placement of the A-zone.

  2. I have a stainless Papoose and the sights are just awful. I replaced 'em with a scope. Found a cheap scope with mil-dot reticle to practice doing range-finding and hold-over drills. Nice gun, bad sights.

  4. You two miss the point... most of the brain is behind the EYES, especially if shooting from a crouch. Want to make that last, close-in shot just pop the top of the skull off and do minimal brain damage? Go ahead and aim above the eyebrows. I'll be slipping a .22 slug through an eye socket.

  5. My objective it to hit the medulla oblongata, which is right behind the snotbox. :D

  6. The positive side of things is that Marlin's service reps are pretty good about sending out replacement bits and pieces at no cost. We busted the rear buckhorn sight on my wife's Marlin 39A, and they sent us a new one, no charge. It was the little tabs on the sides that held it in that snapped.

Do zombies eat dead zombie's brains? I thought maybe once everything had gone soft and squishy that they lost their appetite for 'em.

  10. Colonel Cooper told me tear duct, I aim for the tear duct.

Of course, with MY poor shooting ability... Let's just say that I'll do the reloading for the actual zombie shooters.

  11. Damn, if zombies don't like the brains when their soft and mushy, I guess I'll move to DC. They'll starve before they can find me.

  12. the "eyes/brow" head a-zone box was based on the fact that below that area pistol shots are often non-fatal, unless it goes through to the spinal cord, which is unlikely given deflection.

  13. Tam (and everyone else).

The Zombie Squad is a registered non-profit with a goal of reaching out to SF/fantasy/Horror fans and preaching the "preparadness" mantra.

I'm running the monthly Postal Matches there. We do a different match each month, ranging from the simple to the complex, and calling for a wide variety of guns.

This month's match is a simple "Shoot your carry gun - Cold" match.

    Check it out at www.zombiehunters.org

Go to the Firearms forum for the Postal Match thread and info.

  14. Going for the medulla is OK if you have a high-powered rifle. There are no pistol rounds that have enough penetration (reliably) for that shot.

And the medulla is the preferred shot for police snipers because if destroyed it will prevent a target from moving - even from reflex: All the connections between the brain and everything below it will be severed. Great if a terr is holding a gun or a bomb detonator, not so much for zombies.

So, with a pistol the preferred area is the frontal lobes, hoping to just end it.

Have you tried the 10mm? It'll go into an engine block. I've put a 10mm round through an 8" dia. tree. I'm pretty sure it'll go right through a zombie's skull without much in the way of resistance.

  16. We have a Zombie shoot scheduled for this spring at DPMS. We have created our own targets this year and I was asked to pose for one, wooo hooooo!

We currently have over 200 people signed up for the 1 day shoot, maybe the next will have to run 2 days.

  17. Fainfenix,

Yeah, me too. The convenient and affordable range near me has gone PC on targets. No silhouette or image targets at all. Just boxes and circles.

  18. Bear in mind that zombie's muscle tone is not the best, after a few months of softening up.

10mm penetration is overrated. You get to chose: too much expansion cuts penetration. Too much penetration can be gained by reducing expansion, and I like the 10mm almost as much as the .41 Magnum.

  19. Oh, and there is a standard reflex motion when the spine is cut. The elbows rise and pull to the rear, the back arches. See the Zapruder film for an example. I agree that such a reaction is not much threat to the people around a hostage taker.

  20. Since the barrel can be removed, it's not possible to mount a rear sight on the receiver and have it reliably come back on target after barrel removal (at least in theory). It looks like the dovetail is standard, could you just drift in a non-folder? or a ramp type- I know Williams made one at one time that screwed into a wedge that you drifted into the dovetail. I've always liked the Papoose, but I have a Remington 241, whcih already fills my 22 takedown needs.

  21. I wish I could train to take out brain-eating zombies, but sadly my range has a "no human targets" rule, even for the undead.

  22. This isn't a human, it's a congressman...

  23. I love these! Gonna order a couple of the 10 packs of targets!
