Having taken the time to acquire a 2" J-frame and a 4" K-frame in .22, as well as a conversion kit for 1911's, I'm now looking at getting a setup for my AR-15.
.22 is not only a lot cheaper than centerfire ammo, it also allows a long gun like an AR to be fired on indoor ranges and at other caliber-restricted venues.
Having the .22LR understudies allows me to get in a ton more trigger time than I would if I was limited to their full-bore counterparts.
Michael Bane has some interesting thoughts on rimfire practice. Definitely worth the read...
There's a review of a .22 lr conversion kit at

I bought the Brownells kit with a few of the Black Dog Machine 27-round mags for it. It has been working great, even in rapid fire.
ReplyDeleteAnother plus for choosing a popular handgun platform, such as the Glock or 1911, is that 22 conversion kits are readily available.
ReplyDeleteI would expect some enterprising individual to bring out an XD version before long.
I thought you traded your AR for a classic Browning designed pistol?
ReplyDeleteI got a lower for Xmas and traded into an upper. (A sexy, sexy MGI QCB upper...)
ReplyDeleteAs an Appleseed volunteer, I get the opportunity to see a good number of these conversions put through their paces.
ReplyDeleteI would recommend the CMMG conversion with the Black Dog magazines. They seem to hold up to the stress of an Appleseed as well or better than any other conversion I've seen.
I'm continually amazed by the Japanese guys that shoot airsoft IPSC and IDPA at home, then do great at real matches in Arizona.
ReplyDeleteSeriously good stuff:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nqgj1Flgp20Awesome is his reload!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_aI4n6YaycMAlso hilarious is the Engrish "unload and show clear, hammer down and holster..."
I bought my Hämmerli x-esse (=SIG Trailside) with cheap training in mind. Controls similar to my Glock's allow me to practise drills (malfs, reloads) that would soon be too expensive in 9x19.
ReplyDeleteThe Hammerli is nice... I use an Advantage Arms kit (replace the slide, you're good to go!) to shoot a few "fun matches" as well as practice a lot of other stuff...
ReplyDeleteI'e written about it a bit here
Neat idea!
ReplyDeleteAny thoughts on the Ciener Browning coversion kits?
Best regards,

Have punished the Ceiner AR kit and 3 1911 kits for years and know a Class II that has a couple Ciener AR kits full auto that run like a top. Haven't had a lick of trouble with them if you keep them lubed properly.
ReplyDeleteI just tried out a Brownells/CMMG conversion kit/ Blackdog mags (both 26 and 15 rd). Ran 4 kinds of ammo thru it. Very reliable, no hiccups. Accuracy though is something else. Shot it in a 1980's Colt HBAR 1/7 twist barrel. Tended to shave lead at the small gap between the end chamber adapter and the beginning of the throat. Best I could get was about a 12" group at 100yds. I'm going to try it in my 1/8 Bushie , but I think the twist will still be too fast for what I'd consider "resonable" accuracy of at least 4 min.
ReplyDeleteTam leads, I seem to follow...?
ReplyDeleteI have a 2" Air Lite .22 J-frame (for the fishin' vest, natch) and a recently purchased K-22 model 18 bit'o'perfection... but I favor the 9mm AR platform (Olympic Arms). Pretty cheap ammo; yes, it's in short supply now, but that is temporary, plus it's got enough mustard for varmints at close range, and won't over penetrate in a CQB-defense situation.
