MSNBC has a chirpy piece about all the wonderful technology that's slated to take the place of common sense and good gun handling.
Of course, all the gadgets and gizmos in the world won't keep a dumbass from shooting himself in the foot, as long as he's the dumbass with the key to the internal lock and the fingerprint reader recognizes him as an authorized dumbass.
Gun safety begins with education and ends with good habits, rigorously and constantly practiced. All this Rube Goldberg garbage dangling off guns these days makes them safe only in the same way welding the barrel shut would; by making them useless. Which is what the other side views as the endgame, anyway.

ReplyDeleteOk, for the record I started laughing when you said MSNBC! LOL!
ReplyDeleteThese people are so irrelevant....
Judge Dredd here we come?
ReplyDeleteMSNBC--Mostly Senile, Never Been Coherent...
ReplyDeleteYup...
Old Squid.
This piece is alternatively titled, "Things the Government is Planning on Ramming Down Your Throat". Heaven only knows why we'd want to do anything to ruin our record low number of negligent discharges.
ReplyDeleteIt's really simple: pull the trigger and the gun goes bang. I guess I should get a job as a network journalist, so I can slap together an eleven page presentation about some other suitably binary topic.
You can't make things idiot proof because idiots are too clever.
ReplyDeleteThe closest I ever came to an unaimed and negligent discharge of a firearm was when I was stung by a gigantic and angry wasp at an outdoor range, just as I was lining up my second shot of the day. The first shot had apparently upset her nest-building just over my head.
ReplyDeleteAssuming my handgun had every one of the described gadgets for safety, a negligent discharge in this situation would still be not only possible, but would have had exactly the same possibility of occurring as with my zero-safety GP-100. Which fortunately I did not blast by accident, and only momentarily pointed at the firing line as I put it down, cocked, very fast on the bench to get the wasp off my arm.
So much for progress.
Hence the reason I don't buy very many "modern" guns. I haven't found anything yet that can't be solved with one of my 20th century guns.
ReplyDeleteIn fact I could solve any problem that requires firearm use with most of the guns in my C&R collection.

Hey! You can't shoot yourself in the foot! You're not an authorized dumbass!
ReplyDeleteGun sales in this country are up 400%, gun ownership in this country is at an all time high, people are purchasing guns as a sense of security yet ignoring the need to ensure their gun is safely stored at all times. Every gun that is stolen from a lawful citizen will become a weapon of crime, and every child that is injured or killed by a poorly stored gun is a tragedy.
ReplyDeleteMy name is Mark Ketterer and I believe strongly in the second amendment. I also believe in the many responsibilities that accompany such rights. To say that a citizen has a right to own a gun without first being educated about gun safety is irresponsible. And I also believe part of the instructions of gun handling and gun safety must include the awareness of gun locks in the market and safe, secure gun storage. We all know of cable locks and trigger locks and the downfalls of these products, Gun safes are excellent for storage but price restrictive for many gun owners; and the storage box is restricted to hand guns only and forces you to reach blindly into the box to remove your gun.
I have a better idea; I am the inventor of The Piece Keeper. Together with my partners we manufacture The Piece Keeper in Farmington Hills, Michigan, U.S.A. The Piece Keeper is a wall mounted gun lock. It is designed to accomplish the very goal of safe, secure gun storage. A large portion of our customers have been Law Enforcement and Gun Safety Instructors.
The Piece Keeper is the future of gun safety in the home. If a child is hurt by the very guns that are meant to protect them, then gun ownership is pointless. A gun must be accessible in the time of crisis and yet secured safe from children and intruders. The Piece Keeper accomplishes this very task, and is proudly made in the U.S.A. With the rise in gun ownership in this country we need to impress the need for gun safety and security, and The Piece Keeper addresses the issues of safety and security. There are far too many innocent children paying the ultimate price for gun owner’s irresponsibility. Who these unfortunate children were going to be, sadly we will never know.
We have complete information on The Piece Keeper through our web site; www.thepiecekeeper.net Take a few minutes to review the information and feel free to contact myself.
Every gun that is stolen from a lawful citizen will become a weapon of crime, and every child that is injured or killed by a poorly stored gun is a tragedy.
