Odd weather update.

It has failed to reach 80 again today. And by "failed", I mean that the mercury inched a couple degrees past 70 and then petered out.

When I lived in Tennessee and Georgia, folks who had never been to the Midwest, upon hearing that I escaped from Chicago as a child, would remark about how it must have been cold up there. I'd have to explain to them that, no, we didn't live in igloos, Lake Michigan was actually largely ice-free, and that Midwestern weather was basically nine months of too cold for me and three months of frying eggs on the pavement.

Not this year. We had a feeble attempt at a heat wave in June, but this morning the weatherman was making noises about "Coldest. July. Evar." and suchlike. Apparently all but two days this month have failed to reach the average high temperature, and one day beat a record for lowest high temperature that had stood since 1883.

It's been good for A/C bills, though, and I haven't needed to run the air in the Beemer unless it's sat in a hot parking lot for a bit. Also, a Woobie is a much cozier cover garment than my Royal Robbins vest.

  1. Coolest summer by far in the 14 years I've lived in NJ. Great for my utility bills but my tomatoes aren't happy at all.

  2. My tomatoes are barely putting out, and the heirlooms are plagued with late blight from all the rain.

This is KY; it's supposed to be up in the 90s with me bitching about the heat by now.

    Hey, Algore - global WHAT???

  3. It's been quite cool down here in TN too. It's only 77 out there right now. I'm loving it.

  4. Southeast PA -- coldest summer in years. My garden is pathetic...but we have not had to put in the window A/Cs yet.

Boy, global warming is a bitch.

  5. I'm really enjoying this summer...both because it's actually comfortable outside, and because this discomfits the global warming, er, climate change crowd no end.

They just don't seem to get that the big nuclear furnace up there in the sky has a lot more to do with our weather than the comparatively paltry amount of CO2 we emit.

I'll make a wild prediction: Early frost, followed by colder weather than we've seen the last decade, and heavy snow this winter. Unless, of course, old Sol gets a bad case of acne real soon.

  6. Nine years ago my wife and I went to the Florida keys for our honeymoon in July. We found the weather not much if any worse than any July in Indiana - 90s and high humidity. What happened? Summers have been hot here for my whole life. Now the corn languishes and the tomatoes won't ripen. Algore can take his global warming clap-trap and stuff it.

  9. Well, I hope your hair hurts. Here in Oklahoma City, we had a couple of weeks of 100+, and I mean PLUS. The highest I saw here was 108, but my sister-in-law had four days in a row of 109. Relatively low humidity made it tolerable, but I'm ready for winter already.

  10. You can tell this summer has been dramatically below normal.

All of the news stations are calling it "Global Climate Change" now instead of "Global Warming"...

  11. The corn around here in The Finger Lakes is observably retarded.

  12. Just blame it on El Nino. I hear we've got another one of those this year ...

  13. Hang tough. Iron your sun dress. I'm topless in the sun this afternoon (enjoying the murmur of my Stihl, mostly), and the warmish swelter of the high plains is on it way to Indianapolis.

  14. What Nathan Brindle said. Walking the dog at 5:00 ack emma with temps around 52-54.

By the way, a local weatherman in Hartford has gone public with the fact that the Global Warming/CO2 link is a farce. And CBS hasn't chopped him. Amazing.

  20. Hmmm...would you like some South Texas weather?? I think the low temp during the day in the past 45 days has been 97 deg.

  21. Interesting comments here - I am in midstate NY, talked to NYC area today - cold, wet summer. Seems to be taking off now. Haven't run the AC yet - neither has anyone I talked to near the Big Apple.
My friends with gardens have tomatoes but not the usual summer crop where we get so many tomatoes we can't give them away. They're kind of weak this year, other plants not doing so well. Spread the word - global warming is a bunch of crap.

  22. Last month was unseasonably warm. I liked it, as it made long rides on my suckling pig that much more enjoyable. This month, we're having the standard fall weather of cold rain, clouds, more clouds, and even colder rain. I live in Germany.

  23. I've only been in the pool twice this summer. Both times, too cold, and quickly got out.
