A media wag (another one!?) once said, "Thank God for the First Amendment. If it weren't for a free press, how else would we learn about injured racehorses and runaway brides?"
Only four of the fifteen stories have even the slightest chance of affecting my life or the lives of anyone beyond the people personally involved in them.
We have built an information system that can find out and tell us about just about anything we care to learn.
How fouled up is our species that peeking into people's private windows is what we choose to do with it?
"Only four of the fifteen stories have even the slightest chance of affecting my life..." and I think that's one of the reasons those stories are so popular. They require no real thought, no meaningful opinion, and no real commitment. They're "safe".

Huh. I thought that I'd reported on the death of the only Michael Jackson worth noting, about 2 years ago. (R.I.P., Beer Hunter.)
ReplyDeleteI count 5 solid stories to the right of importance, if their headlines are to be believed. But only the fluff and more fluff make it above the fold.
