...I overslept.
I just thought you should know that, according to the Today show, Michael Jackson is still dead.
This is just completely out of control. When Tim Russert choked on his last cookie, I expressed a bit of surprise at the amount of airtime spent eulogizing someone who was, let's face it, not exactly a household name. But this... This is completely off the chain.
This is like some mutant offspring of the death of Princess Di and the kind of state funeralizing that we give to famous ex-Presidents and Gerald Ford. Kim Jong Il could vaporize Honolulu, Department of Public Records building and all, and it would be forced below the fold by the toxicology reports of a washed-up pop star who had sold a lot more tabloids than albums over the last decade.
It is just going to get worse. Think of how many unreleased songs and various bits of personal archival data there must be. They will be coming out with "Jacko: The Unfinished Album" and like things for years. The record company will probably make more off of him dead than they did in life.

My god, it'll be worse than Tolkien.
ReplyDeleteHmmm.... Crazy wingnut theory for you.
ReplyDeleteHistorically, administrations have been accused of starting wars to bring the US economy out of recessions. Alternatively they use foreign policy crises to distract folks from domestic problems.
We have a war going already and it is not being prosecuted in such a manner as to stimulate the economy (but it could be). The current foreign policy of this nation is in a shambles and wandering without any decisive direction. Domestically nothing seems to be working to give the American people a happy buzz(health care, cap and trade, bailouts, etc.)
What if, this whole incident is being orchestrated to distract the American people from... well everything else that is happening in the world?
Michael Jackson is the perfect storm of pop culture news. Great talent transformed into a bizarre freak show. The legacy media can't help themselves. When something like this happens, they forget all about pretending to have any serious interest in world events, and show their true colors as representatives of the lowest common denominator.
ReplyDeleteTim Russert at least deserved it.
ReplyDeleteAs for the theory... tin foil, aisle 6.
And since no one buys albums anymore, it will forever be the King of Weird who has the most sellingest album of all time.
ReplyDeleteSo he will. Never. Go. Away.
Maybe Dark Side of the Moon is still on the charts...
And you're watching too much TV
ReplyDeleteHe'd already completed the transition from poor black boy to rich white lady, so dead princess is the logical next step.
ReplyDeleteWe visited the Seattle music museum the other day - they had "The Glove" on exhibit, in this giant room playing his stuff.
ReplyDeleteLike all the science fiction props downstairs, it was amazing how much tattier it looks in real life.
Sad, really. But it is the business of illusion, I guess.
It is the culminating apogee of the "Cult of personality"...

well "whacko jacko" was a strange duck to begain with. This will make elvis wish he could do it all over again. I hate the celeb crap the networks put out so i generally tune the junk out.
ReplyDeleteIt has been my guess that all the media coverage of MJ's demise is a deliberate attempt to distract the American people from anything of importance to them.
ReplyDeleteIf the All Barack, New Barack, and Complete Barack Channels run 28 minutes of MJ coverage, they only have two minutes to slip in a word to the effect that an ejected Honduran dictator is trying to return to power, and Iran retained one, both with the blessing and complicity of our dear leader.
And they can conveniently ignore the fact that stock trading between houses for their own book is holding up the stock market; that despite having a perfect one payer public health system Canucks are thronging to buy private health and prescription insurance; that "gun free, crime free England" is officially the most dangerous country on Earth - and a whole lot more of those "inconvenient truths."
It wouldn't do to warn the fish before the hook is set, you know.

Speaking as someone born after the man's career peaked, I haven't really cared one way or the others, except in the "oh, someone I know of but wasn't around for died" sense. Kind of like George Harrison, except I actually like The Beatles.
