Houston, we had a problem.

My cheeks were rosy, but the Getting Roomie On The Shuttle To The Starship procedure wasn't. We had a minor snag.

On mornings like this, while she's finishing up her getting dressed and suchlike, I go clear the sidewalk out to the garage and de-snow her car.

Sure, it's easy to sweep a dusting of powder off the sidewalk with a broom, but getting into said garage this AM required an extension cord and a hair dryer, after an attempt with a butane lighter was foiled by the gentle 22mph zephyrs wafting from the sou'-sou'west.

13 degrees is frickin' cold.

  1. "13 degrees is frickin' cold."

This is the main reason BRB's family (including PDB) finally left the far North. I count our sojourn in Canada in winters: 18 freakin' winters, not 17 and a half years.

NC is a balmy 43 and clear.

  2. -5.1F is also cold. No wind to speak of though, which is a change from the 50 MPH breeze we had Tuesday night.

  3. We're supposed to climb all the way into single digits for our high today in Minnesnowta. And those are POSITIVE single digits, a veritable heat wave.

  4. Right now it's 3ºF here in Salt Lake; where's this global warming I keep hearing about?

  5. Look on the bright side; the wind keeps frost from forming, so you don't have to scrape the windows for 15 minutes while your nose falls off.

    I'd sing Zip-a-dee-doo-dah, but I think you'd shoot me.

Yeah, but only to wound. I'm in a pretty chipper mood today, actually. :D ;)

  7. If a bunch of horseback Comanches were savvy enough to go south in the winter and north in the summer, what does that say about the smarts of White-eyes?

Or you could keep some of that cold weather windshield juice in a spray bottle in the freezer...

I'm trying to do my part! (puts another log in stove) What about you all? I can't do it all with my little 300 dollar stove!

  10. I feel your pain.

Yesterday it was 82 degrees on the drive home. The AC was a touch frigid for my tastes and had to turn it off and roll down the windows.

  11. Wait- you have to de-snow the car in the garage? Dang, sounds like you need a better garage.

This looks really ugly, but back when I had a detached garage I used carpet tacks to nail a flap of old inner tube over the door handle. Keeps rain etc. from forming ice on the keyhole. Plus if you oil it it stays oiled longer.

Come to think of it, that was standard equipment on my Land Rover.

  12. Missing Tennessee yet, Tam?
Myself, I'm thinking of moving to Florida.

  13. I'm kinda surprised nobody has mentioned how they didn't have hair driers in their day and there was a frozen door on both sides of the hill they walked to school.

The decent into cold dark winter did come to my neck of MN damn abruptly this year. It's still going to take a few more seasons to convince me moving to a desert a better idea.

Thank God for small favors? Running serpentine is tricky when it's icy out.

  15. "chipper mood" (snerk!)

Mehbee it's the cold, but when I read that, this popped into my head:

" And I guess that was your accomplice in the wood chipper, there." -Marge Gunderson, very pregnant cop in "Fargo"

It was -5F and 14" of white stuff on the front porch this morning in Reno. Yeah, this is the desert your mother DIDN'T tell you about.

  19. It was 6 with a wind chill of -10 out here in West Whereinthehell, Texas earlier this week. With a snow chaser. Not as much as they got in Houston, though.
