Cold, thanks for asking.

It's fifteen degrees out there right now, but the gentle zephyr wafting from the general direction of Detroit makes it feel like the fo'c'sle of the Endurance. Still, we should make it within eleven degrees of the average daily high for the date, which is a durn sight better than yesterday, and the Weather Gnome on the TeeWee predicted we may even see the far side of freezing by a degree or two next week.

  1. If the Endurance mentioned was Shackleton's ship, the HMS prefix doesn't apply, as that designates a commissioned ship of the Royal Navy. Endurance didn't belong to the Royal Navy, but was purchased for Shackleton's expedition, which was privately sponsored.

  2. Three degrees this morning. However, no wind and temps forecast to rise above freezing today. That will melt off the foot of snow received Thursday in a hurry. Sometimes living in a semi-arid desert has it's advantages.

  3. 50 on the Terlingua porch, right now; s'posed to be in the upper 60s, this PM.

Comanches went north in the summers, south in the winters. Red Man smarter than White Eyes.

  8. Invoking Shackleton and the Endurance? Being a wee tad melodramatic now aren't you? :-D

  9. That's not a zephyr blowing in from Detroit, that's corruption deep enough to chill a man's (or woman's) bones.

Although the car business is winding down, the corruption business is in full swing.

  10. OBTW, the Endurance/Shackleton adventure proves that G-D watches out for idiots (like Shackleton)....I used him as an example of an inept leader who lucked out, in my MBA thesis

  11. I don't think Shackelton's contemporaries agreed with you Doc: "...and if I am in the devil of a hole and want to get out of it, give me Shackleton every time."

Bringing the *entire* team on the Endeavor expedition home (including the stowaway) shows a pretty high level of leadership.

  12. Lewis & Clark used v.innovative folding boats, canvas on an iron frame. They went way over budget, too. Don't even start on The Air Rifle. The argument could be made that they were NASA.

Those fake-libertarian Rand-totin' NASA groupies? In her "Apollo and Dionysus" essay, Rand revealed herself to be one of them.

  13. Watch for a local-papers meme that It Isn't Really That Cold Here. I'm seeing that all over.

It's Gore's Last Gasp. Who are you going to believe -- Real Science, or your lying facial pores?
