The company's head honchos know this geographical fact, but they like the bit of irony that comes from a weapon-gear manufacturer operating so close to the liberal stronghold of Boulder.You know, I'd always thought I liked them because they make good gear and have outstanding customer service, but maybe it was something deeper all along.
"We put Boulder, Colorado, on everything that we make, and really that's just a slap in the face to the hippies," said Drake Clark, senior director of sales and business development for Magpul.

ReplyDeleteNot-with-standing my internet persona, in real life I can only claim to be half a gun-nut. Yeah...I have a CCW, but I only carry a couple of times a month. And if I'm lucky, I can manage to get to the range 10 times a year. That puts me way ahead of most gun owners, but quite a bit away from many.
ReplyDeleteSo, with that said, I've had to be cautious about becoming a "gear-do". I like the idea of gathering up as many toys and "stuff" as the next gun-nut, but in a practical sense, I know I'll never (or rarely) make use of any of it.
But having spent 4 years in Boulder and as a University of Colorado graduate, the idea of doing something solely to piss off the hippies in Boulder does have it's appeal. I may have to order up some Magpul stuff to stick into the back of my pile of Things-I'll-Never-Use.

Don't forget that Soldier of Fortune magazine has long been published in Boulder. And its spin-off, Paladin Press, is there too. (I used to go to their Christmas parties when a grad student at CU-Boulder--good time.)
ReplyDeleteI knew I always loved Magpul... I've been following (in much of the way a civi can follow a company like Magpul) since the old rubber grips for magazines. My KISS Keep Texas Zombie Free Rifle is, when done, going to be almost all Magpul furniture. I have the MBUS on it as a rear sight, and I am not disappointed with it yet.

ReplyDeleteNoah: I played with the Magpul BUS for a bit and liked it. Seems as solid as their mags. Only reason I don't have a set is that it seems that the front sight may get a bit melty on the gas block under certain conditions.

ReplyDelete@Noah D; I've got a rear MBUS on my latest carbine build, and have to say it's fantastic. It's holding up fine, and the sub-zero range trip on New Years Eve day didn't phase it in the least. Nice clean site picture, and a good price.
Magpul themselves do say that the front one should not be used on a gas block rail, but it'll work fine on a handguard rail. (I'm using a YHM flip up front block, so I don't have any experience with the MBUS front yet.) I do plan on adding a set to my S&W 22 when it finally shows up though.
Magpul reminds me of Quicksilver and Patagonia back in the late 70's. They started out making hardware, (surfboards and climbing gear) but when things all boiled down they were really selling an image and a ton of T-shirts and stickers.

Magpul isn't a gun maker, plastic or otherwise. They've never claimed to be. They did come up with one rifle design, but because they are not a gun maker, they sold it to someone who was.
They are, and always have been, an accessory manufacturer, and they've become a rather successful one at that, selling OEM stuff to the likes of S&W and Ruger, among others.
I realize that black rifles and CAS rarely overlap, but your assessment of the company is inaccurate.
Hey I love my CTR, cool looking enhanced trigger guard and poking fun at hippies for that matter. And if some former American soldiers can make a ton of money selling sizzle good for them.
