Taking a left turn near Albuquerque...

When the going gets weird, the weird turn homicidal:
The couple met up on the trails Monday and started drinking, police said.

"She had decided she needed to go to the restroom," Albuquerque police cheif [sic] Ray Schultz said. "The male had asked if he could watch her go to the restroom."
Short form: Wiccan gets drunk, pees, gets naked, stabs boyfriend to death with head shop athame. Also, there was allegedly some tying-up action with a rope at some point in the sordid tale.
"This is a time of Wiccan holiday, being the solstice [sic]," said Schultz. "We're still investigating to determine if that had something to do with this particular homicide."
Yeah, they were engaging in an ancient rite worshiping Bud Weiser, the forest spirit in charge of being noisily ill in the woods. I'm sure that's somewhere in chapter nine of The Golden Bough.

I am not going to pretend that this makes any kind of sense to me, but I will note that nothing like this ever happens on Law & Order.

But in three weeks, it will.

Usually, when something like that happens on L&O, the perpetrators are a couple of fundamentalist Christians and, instead of a "head shop athame" the murder weapon is something like a replica SS dagger, complete with the "Mein Ehre heisst Treue" inscription.

That kind of crap is why I quit watching that show...

Then to hell with that show, never watched it and now I know why.
othing like this ever happens on Law & Order. Does that make this one of those "Unsolved Victim Unit-Thing" things?

  6. Nooo! My bad - it was, "She told police a similar story in 1999, but never followed through to prosecute the alleged rape."
    Oh nevermind.

  9. "I first became aware of it, Mandrake, during the physical act of love...Yes, a profound sense of fatigue, a feeling of emptiness followed. Luckily I-I was able to interpret these feelings correctly. Loss of essence. I can assure you it has not recurred, Mandrake. Women, er, women sense my power, and they seek the life essence. I do not avoid women, Mandrake...but I do deny them my essence."

Criminy. The things you miss....oops. :)

    Enh.

Nice Golden Bough reference, though I suspect this gal was more of the "skimmed a Silver Ravenwolf book in high school and thought the clothes looked cool on Buffy" sect. :p

    Translation:

    "I see satanic people..."

Geesh, I know Wiccans are weird and all, but that whole "Wiccans are all evil devil worshipers who murder people (oh and they steal babies too)" meme is really getting old. Ostara was last saturday (march 20). All of my witchy friends were out in the woods dancing around nekkid (and probably screwing) None of them where killing anyone. There is very little killing in Wicca, there does seem to be a lot of nudity, but very little killing (like none) is sanctioned by the religon. Go pick on Islam, I know it's becoming over-played, but at least you can point to where their "holy" people are actually saying to go kill people.

  14. I will also note that "Wiccan" is, like "Buddhist", mostly a way for white people to announce that they're really hip and .alt and wanna come back to my place and see my unicorn tattoo?

(No offense meant to my readers who really do groove on the whole "nature spirituality" thing. I've known nice Baptists, too.)

Because a religion whose primary tenet is "harm none" was a motivating factor in a murder.

I'm gonna have to go with Stuart's theory here: the police chief sees "non-Judeo-Christian" and goes "I see satanic people." Because anyone who doesn't worship the Judeo-Christian-Muslim god must be a satanist.

  23. Yet another senseless act of violence that wouldn't have happened if we ban firearms from parks!

And on a more serious note - had they been "of the book" (any of the three), it wouldn't have been noted. Possibly unless he was jewish and she went Bobbit...

The origins of polyamory combined with Paganism would be "Stranger in a Strange Land" by Heinlein. Strange, but true.

  26. "but I will note that nothing like this ever happens on Law & Order."

There was a time when it might have, but that was very early in the series run. Like most series it degenerated over time, and after 2000, the writers and actors hurled themselves and the show over a liberal cliff.

farmist: actually Dec 22 is the winter solstice. Equinoxes are spring and fall.
