Ah, the sounds of Spring...

Birds chirping...

Bicycles whirring...

Lawnmowers buzzing...

And best of all, the music from the ice cream truck!

There is something atavistic going on here, obviously. I don't recollect actually buying anything from an ice cream truck for... oh... twenty-something years, but without fail the sight and sound of one going past can call up the sensations of those days when Summer seemed like an eternity stretching out endlessly in front of me, rather than a brief interval of lawn mowing sandwiched between snow shovelings.

  1. It's even better when you have kids...

Watching their little heads whip around when they hear the tunes playing is a hoot - if there had been ice cream trucks in turn-of-the-century Russia, Pavlov wouldn't have needed to use dogs.

    :)

  2. As an added bonus, just when I think my job sucks, I think about having to listen to that music ALL DAY!!!

  4. We didn't have ice cream trucks in the town where I was raised...something about being in the middle of BFE, I think.

So...I'm enjoying a rite of childhood on which I missed out.

Plus...somebody has to help the kids cross the street.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

Sounds of spring: automatic weapons fire from the nearby quarry. I LOVE my 'hood!

  8. I'm trying to picture Tamara, even young Tamara, running after the ice cream truck.
    It just ain't working.
Laying an L-Shaped ambush, yes, but running after? No.

  9. I was the ice cream man many years ago. Drove open top jeeps with freezers on the back, rang a little ship's bell mounted on the windshield frame, ding ding, ding ding, cruising down the street at idle in first gear. Noon to sunset six days a week. Got to hang out with kids and cute teen girls. Most fun job I ever had.

  10. Come on Tam. You know you chased him down on your bike and scarfed down an ice cream sandwich. I mean I would do that....Still it's no match for this:

  11. Funny how I would follow my girls out to the truck and out of the blue eleventy little kids would appear, none with any money of coarse.
At least a sawbuck and I prolly pissed off a bunch of mommies fixing dinner.

  12. I think it has less to do with actually buying the ice cream than with having the option of buying ice cream -- and with having it brought to you, to boot.

  13. Spring. And the idiots who follow Spring Training (thank the gods that is done!)

And let's not forget Spring Breakers - though there are fewer of the them, and they generally stay put. (Unlike the Spring Training folks who have to drive to various stadiums - causing mayhem along the way.)

"If it's tourist season, why can't we shoot them?"
