Drill, baby, drill.

CNN has a poll up on the recent conveniently-timed oil platform whoopsie and its impact on how you feel about offshore drilling.

While the Governor of Florida would rather huddle in a cave wrapped in synthetic rabbit pelts than risk a spill, most people seem to understand that, for the foreseeable future at least, we still need the dinosaur juice even if it means the occasional un-photogenic seabird. Once we get enough nuke plants online, we can throttle back on the drilling.

Personally, while most people are wringing their hands about getting oil on their seabirds, I'm freaking out because they're getting seabirds in my oil. A couple of baby albatross feathers will clog up a fuel filter like you wouldn't believe.

  1. Oh man, if I could buy a car that ran on oil soaked seabirds, I'd show up at the dealer with cash in hand.

  5. Greenpeace has been suppressing the 200 MPG whale/baby seal blubber carburetor for decades!

And in the good news, the lower house of the Belgian parliament has passed a statute which prohibits going masked in public. Unanimously.

Pardon me while I swoon a bit.

  8. Speaking of drilling, or rather getting drilled:

"Obama bans new drill as oil hits La."

  12. Drill.

Everywhere there might be a deposit.

    And do it now.

I think a politician would do himself well in a campaign to put that bit into his radio spots, promising to vote yes on domestic drilling operations.

  13. Is it just me, or do there seem to be an awful lot of "convienently timed" misfortunes lately?

On the eve of the health care vote, a major insurer was forced to hike premiums in response to increased regulatory costs and a shrinking risk pool.

On the eve of Congressional debate on "financial reform," the SEC went after Goldman Sachs over what might well be a bogus claim of investor fraud.

On the eve of cap-and-trade/"green jobs" energy legislation coming to Congress, we've been presented with both a major coal mining disaster and now a blowout, fire and massive spill on an off shore drilling rig.

Not to mention a similarly "convienently-timed" collapse of the banking system just in time for the last Presidential election.

Yeah, I know, that's just crazy talk...but in an administration whose leaders follow the mantra "Never let a crisis go to waste" it does seem curiously odd that we've had nothing but crises one after the other, no?

  15. And again, the eternal question isn't whether you are paranoid, but are you parnoid enough?

  16. Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean they aren't all out to get me.

  17. Hey! I'm not paranoid! Who told you that?!?

Worth noting is that for eight years, the left accused the Bush administration of wag-the-dog tactics. Given Obama &Co.'s history of clinical projection and "turn around and do what we accused them of doing"-style governance, it does indeed make me wonder.

  19. Oh, so I wasn't the only one who has noticed the rather...bizarre coincidences lately?

  20. It's not just you Silver and Tam.

"Permit me a brief, passing moment of black-helicopters paranoia. President Obama announces a change in national policy on offshore drilling, and twenty days later a platform explodes, creating an environmental disaster that, we’re told, may be worse than the Exxon Valdez. That’s timing so perfect it’s usually associated with Abbott and Costello. There are a lot of folks who passionately opposed the possibility of expanded offshore drilling, who would have the motive to help “enable” an accident that discredited the policy..."

I guess Jim Geraghty's sizing out a wookie suit.

Now all we need is Goldberg to get serious in his anti-zombie stockpiling.

  21. Wes S,

You're not sufficiently cynical. Keep working on it.

During the summer before the 2004 elections, I watched the price of gasoline go from ~1.50/gal to ~2.00/gal. Within a few weeks after the election it was back down to ~1.50/gal.

I said then that someone had manipulated the price to influence the election.

In Jan 2008 gasoline was ~2.00/gal. By June it was ~4.00/gal. I observed they were doing a better job this time.

Remember that the "banking crisis" began when Chuckie Schumer leaked his letter to authorities questioning the health of a particular bank, which promptly suffered a run.

Then of course the sub-prime bubble burst, and Dems were off to the races.

We have suffered, and are continuing to suffer, coordinated attacks on our economy and on the dollar.

    Cloward-Piven, anyone?
