There's an owie empty hurtie feeling in my tummy...

...that can only be filled with a Reuben.

However, like a donkey starving to death between two full mangers, I have a half-dozen places that serve a decent Reuben in a one-mile radius of where I sit and a bicycle in the garage. Alternately, I have half the fixins on hand and could get the rest from the Fresh Market.

I'm probably going to sit here and dither until I pass out from hunger...

  1. I made some Reuben the other day from a corned beef brisket that I smoked. Topped off with a Jameson on the rocks and a Peterson full of Black Cavendish it was pure Celtic bliss.

  6. I guess that is one advantage to a metro area! I just dined on some Van Camps pork n beans and a ham sandwich myself. Sigh.....

  7. Oh don't even start with me. Can you imagine trying to make a reuben (or any sandwich) on matzah? That would not be a pretty sight.

  8. There is exactly one (1) actual factual deli that serves quality deli meats and sandwiches in the state whose existence I'm aware of. It's in Santa Fe.

  9. I see I'm not the only one who dithers about trying to decide what to do about lunch. Although my problem extends to breakfast as well, or any meal that someone else doesn't remind me about. Seriously, shouldn't one meal a day be enough?

    Bad thing is, my 4 year old son has the same lack of interest in food I do. I love good food, but I forget to eat...

When we drove out to Grice's Gun Shop (they claim to be the largest in PA) in Clearfield to pick up a bunch of guns (cheaper than shipping them) last Friday we made our usual stop at Denny's Beer Barrel Pub and I had their "Rowdy Reuben Burger". Basically, if you couldn't decide between a Reuben and a 1/2 angus burger this is both in a single sandwich. Sweet potato fries and a cold Leinenkugel Bock topped it off just right. I've never tried their "challenge burgers" (as seen on "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives" on FoodTV)...something about trying to eat a hamburger the size of my head just doesn't work for me. They have a 2# or 3# burger that you get prizes for finishing in time...and they will make 6#, 15#, 50# and 100# burgers with a few days notice (they need it to get the proper size buns in!)

  11. Ohhh, the humanity. I feel your pain. A half-dozen respectable Reuben's within a mile and you are racked with indecision. Life is hard.

    I've got to drive sixty miles for some quality, fatty, New York Deli pastrami and even then can't find a decent hard crusted authentic rye bread.

    Have some sympathy on those of us in the hinterland.

  12. The best Reuben I had was years ago in Philadelphia and the worst was most recently in Menlo Park. They didn't know how to even cook the pastrami, my teeth bounced off it like a piece of Goodyear rubber. Should have ordered Carnitas I guess.

  13. Mmmmm. A Reuben would hit the spot right now.

    I've found that if you buy in bulk, you can make cheap Reubens at home. Provided that you're willing to eat them for breakfast, lunch, and dinner for a few days. That's not a problem for me.
