A chopper has been circling overhead for the past 30+ minutes, and the sleepy streets of quaint Concord, TN are full of so many cop cars running their full suite of blinkies that you'd think the "HOT NOW" light had just been lit at Krispy Kreme.
I thought about wandering outside to find out what's up, but it would A) set off the little self-propelled burglar alarms, and B) stumbling into the middle of a manhunt is #7 on my list of Dumb Things You Probably Shouldn't Do.
I'll be tucking myself in shortly...
...with my heater close(r) at hand.
That happened in my neighborhood about a year ago. Cops everywhere, streets blocked, helicopters, search lights... It went on for about an hour. Then everyone went home. I kept checking the news for the next few weeks to see what happened, and there was no mention of anything. My guess is that it was another big "raid" based on hearsay and falsely sworn warrants that amounted to nothing.
ReplyDeleteA few years back I was house sitting south of Denver, near the foothills. Hearing a steady chopper noise for a while, I went out to look. Sure enough, chopper hovering at a fair height. I go back in, until I notice chopper noise has increased. Now, 3 choppers hovering at fair height. I go back in and turn on the magic eye. Breaking News! Bear in a tree! And just about on the next block. As I leave to go home and feed the cat, soccer fams are driving in and parking to go see the bear in a tree. The way I see things, a slow news day means nothing notable crashed, exploded, burned, or became unfound.
ReplyDeleteProbably someone forgot to pay their library fines.
ReplyDeleteFunny life I have, living somewhere where people still look up at the sound of sirens.

So what are the first six?
ReplyDeleteI've always been keen on Miss Piggy's nugget of wisdom:'Never eat anything bigger than your head.'
Best wishes.
What's your top ten list look like?
ReplyDeleteWe have black choppers overhead on a semi-regular basis out here in the sticks...mostly, they're looking for marijuana fields, or so I've been told. True? False? Wouldn't know.
"It was Pandelerium!"
ReplyDeleteWe can, no doubt, expect the appropriate yokel interview."He always seem like a nice quite(sic) guy" Hopefully it ends up on Youtube, with a full Infrared Choppercam view of the local gendermerie rodney king'ing the suspect. Overdue for a good Junk on the Bunk shot too.
Alabama assistant coach spotted in the bushes.
ReplyDeleteMakes me think of the guy in my hometown who ran from the cops at night ... wearing light-up shoes.
ReplyDeleteThat was a fun one for the newshounds.
Way back in the before time, when the earth first cooled and there were no little G. spawnlings, the Mrs. and I lived in a quaint (read: tiny) apartment in an urban (read: crime-ridden) area. Rent was cheap (read: REALLY cheap) and it was located halfway in between my school and her work.
ReplyDeleteCame home from visiting friends one night to find four town cruisers in the parking lot of our apartment complex. Lights on, searchlights lit up, cops combing the surrounded wooded area.
Park the car, get out, officer walks by so I ask what's going on.
"Nothing" was all he said.
When we got to the apartment, I took my .44 Special out of the safe and left it sitting right on the nightstand.
At the insistence of anti-gun Mrs. G...
Since you are in Tennessee Tamara did you feel the earthquake that I felt here in Maryville? It happened at 10:40 this morning.I have not heard anything about it but it felt about like the other two we have had in the last couple of weeks.

@Sarah--I have it on good authority that their are no black helicopters! The fact is they are dark green! Seriously.
ReplyDeleteI found out the hard way when the choppers are flying over at night dont "spotlight" them with a maglight to see if it is police or a news chopper. I only peeked for a couple of seconds, saw it was police, turned off the light and was headed back to bed when about 45 seconds later I had a cruiser out front and an officer banging on my door. They instructed me not to "interfere" with police. I mumbled some apologies and went back to bed. :)

ReplyDeleteSo...using the Helicopter to see if the laser and the sights line up at the same place would NOT be a good idea?
Had about 30 police cares and a state patrol helicopter circling my place when I had 50 of the outlaws over for Christmas one year. They were looking for a perp who had fled the police for fraud charges, left his car on the railroad tracks when a train was coming with no key and the doors and then proceeded to carjack a vehicle at the gas station by the tracks and ran for 5 more miles until he hid out in the local drug house. They found him in the attic, he wouldn't come out until they threatened to boost a canine officer up there with him.
ReplyDeleteHER family wondered what kind of neighborhood we were raising our kids in.

ReplyDeleteDammit, I missed it!
I was out by Dutchtown Road by then and felt nothing. :(
Was home one day (at the cheap-ish apartments 2 blocks from the local university) with my 2 boys (then 4 and 7) when they came in from playing outside because "storm troopers were going to attack the rebel base". I thought they were playing StarWars until I peeked outside and noticed 3 different agencies all geared up for a fight...and then we heard the flash-bang...
ReplyDeleteOur "neighbors" had been storing meth for a certain well-known motorcycle gang.
Not exactly a good experience, but our local agencies did a good job, IMO.
"My guess is that it was another big "raid" based on hearsay and falsely sworn warrants that amounted to nothing."
ReplyDeleteBecause it would be impossible for your crack team of local journalists to have missed the story of an escape, so this is the only logical conclusion?
George:
ReplyDeleteThere are indeed black helicopters. Big, GLOSS BLACK helicopters. Bell 212/UH-1N 14 passenger twin Hueys, to be precise. Without N-reggies. And I've got color slides taken with Kodachrome ASA 25 on a bright sunny day to prove it (pictures shot 'through-the-fence' at a large-ish air base in the desert somewhere between Seattle and Phoenix). And unlike print film and most digital cameras, Kodachrome 25 doesn't lie, especially when taken on a bright sunny day (gives 'ya those nice bright colors, don'tcha know?). The pictures were taken during loading, and the passengers were dressed all Izods-n-Dockers-n-Ray-Bans. Pretty odd-looking 'attache' cases they had though.

1 - I've got no idea what was up in Concord, I'm kind of living in my own little sphere these days thanks to work sucking my brain dry.
ReplyDelete2 - Never much cottoned to the term 'heater'. Always thought 'cooler' would fit better, makes criminals and situations much colder when used right.
3 - How long are you in town?
I just split. Should be back next month or the month after, though.
