This little SIGgy went to gun school...

The SIG P228 was always my favoritest SIG; I've had a couple of them over the years and actually used one for purse carry for some time, back when that was how I usually toted a heater. Like the Glock 19/23 or the Commander-size 1911, for me it falls right in that sweet spot of being easy to conceal and big enough to shoot like a full-size gun.

ToddG at Pistol-Training.com has links up to a guy who's performing a public service by photo-documenting the life of his P228: New, at 5k rounds, and now at 10k rounds.

With internet forums usually crowded with pictures of pristine safe queens, it's good to see what happens when guns get used.

  2. I've had a Sig P228 for more than twenty years now since my wife gave it to me new for a birthday present (that's why I've still got the same wife too!) It has been carried a lot in a Kramer belt scabbard and despite the knowledge that a 1911 is a more macho choice, it still is my favorite carry gun.

  4. Personally, I have never cared much for SIG's. This despite the fact that when I work in a uniform assignment, I have to carry the Dept. issued P229 brick. Even the Chief doesn't like them (they were bought by the previous administration). We are considering going to the Glock (of course) but fiscal constraints have pushed that aside for the time being.

I actually shoot pretty well with the SIG, but it just doesn't feel right to my hand after nearly 40 years of experience with the 1911.
Fortunately, when off-duty or in plainclothes I can carry a gun of my choice (as long as I have "officially" qualified with it).

  5. I never much cared for SIGs either. I've owned three of them---a couple of 220s and a 225. They weren't bad---they fed, fired and extracted just fine---but I never got the mystique. As a matter of fact, in a move that will get me expelled from the ranks of the true gun snobs, when I sold my 220 (the first one) I kept a Taurus 945, which I actually preferred.

I will echo my preference for handguns that fall into Tam's reference point of the 228, the G19/23, and the Colt Commander. Big enough to shoot well, small enough to carry well: as Uncle Jeff Cooper used to write, "where the curves cross."

This n00b says THANK YOU. Shorter Half is looking for a family "summer carry" gun and I hated the LCP the new Tarus 380 he handed me today. He's welcome to them. I kept waiting for them to squirt out of my hands like a wet bar of soap.

It will be worth checking out even with the Teutonic Black Magic surcharge.

    Thanks for the suggestion.

  7. They are not left-hander friendly. Seems almost like they were deliberately designed that way. Been a looonng time since I bothered to even pick one up. Too damn frustrating. Always wondered how well a right-hander would fare with one if forced to fight with just their left hand usable.

  8. I had a 229 9mm for a few years, and liked it ok. A bit big for regular ccw, but a good shooter.

However, now, I'd go with a CZ.

  9. My 228 hasn't been to the range in some time. I need to rectify that, soon.
