"It is unthinkable that someone who has tried to massacre his own people can play a part in their future government," said the article, titled "Libya's Pathway to Peace," by U.S. President Barack Obama, British Prime Minister David Cameron and French President Nicolas Sarkozy. "It would be an unconscionable betrayal."*coughSaddamHusseincough*
So, Hu Jintao, where were you on the night of June 3rd, 1989?
Mugabe's stacked up a few bodies in his time, too. Why aren't Obama and Sarkozy rescuing the poor long-suffering Zimbabweans? For that matter, nobody's deploying troops to save Darfur. Are you guys racist or something?
How do these guys decide which "betrayals" are "unconscionable" and which are, you know, just business as usual? Throw darts? Is there a Magic 8-Ball in the Oval Office, official dice at 10 Downing Street, and a deck of tarot cards in the Élysée Palace?
Hmmm. This might explain a few things?
ReplyDeleteThis is what American foreign policy has become: The President deciding which country he can bomb, in order to gain a few percentage points in the polls.
ReplyDeleteJoan, that's a great observation.
ReplyDeleteThey were colonized.
They were given independence.
They were idiots.
They're getting their independent country card revoked and getting recolonized.
There's a lesson to be learned here.
"How do these guys decide which "betrayals" are "unconscionable" and which are, you know, just business as usual?"
ReplyDeleteIt depends on where the European oil interests are. Libya is chock full of European oil and thus subject to betrayals and unconscionable acts.
Obama, who wants to sit at the cool kids' table at lunch, will do whatever it takes to get their attention: copy their health care system, raise taxes, sever the UK-US alliance, or fight their wars.
Shootin' Buddy
While I have no love at all for Godaffy, this whole thing smacks of bullying with a thin veneer of humanitarianism to sell it to the proles.
ReplyDelete"Yeah, teacher, I smacked Muammar around and took his milk money, but I know that you never liked him, and, anyway, he just would have spilled the milk on the table in the lunchroom, so I was really doing you a favor."
With regard to Joan of Argghh!'s link about Chinese emmigration to Africa... Well, if the figures about HIV, famine, malaria, war, and other causes of death on the Dark Continent are accurate, they only need to wait around for a few more years and the place will be pretty much deserted anyway.
Oil
ReplyDeleteIt can't be as simple as oil. Slobodan Milošević didn't have a drop, and Sudan is floating on the stuff.
ReplyDeleteI'm with you Tam; NOTHING is simple with these idiots. There has to be some kind of convoluted formula involving the zodiac, chicken-bones and feathers.
ReplyDeleteUnless, of course, it's all whim and caprice..
I'm sure it works something like this.
ReplyDeleteIt's all about the packaging.
ReplyDeleteThe Admin's likely calculations are really quite simple.
ReplyDeleteBesides sitting on some sweet sweet European crude, K-man betrayed the socialist ideal and was made to withdraw from international terrorism as well as the pursuit of WMD by republican presidents...Not to mention the need for a little bump of statistical coke for the pollsters.

A clever British ghetto boy.
In the case of Libya, it's oil that can be easily got at.
ReplyDeleteSudan's oil has to go either thru the Suez or thru a pipeline with Egypt. All France has to do to get Libyan oil is cross the street.
As for the former Yugoslavia, NATO didn't get involved until Slick Willy guilted them in.
So far as the Euros are concerned, as long as their economic interests are unaffected, they're perfectly content to let the Wogs slaughter each other with gay abandon for as long as they please.

Evidently yes, yes, yes, and yes. Darts, 8-Ball, dice, and tarot.
ReplyDeleteThe worst has come to pass, we are fighting a European war as their proxy.
Let's see, how many Americans have Bush and Obama sent to their deaths & dismemberments? At what point does it become an unconscionable betrayal for Obama to continue to be involved in this government?
ReplyDeleteSarkovy needs this war. Both for French oil interests, and for an upcoming election.
ReplyDeleteObama is a boob who will say yes to whatever leader talked to him last.

ReplyDeleteThere's a 1,000-piece puzzle of a map of the world, and every now and then the UN Security Council gets it out and puts it together. Someone steals one piece at the outset and hides it, and wherever the hole ends up, that's the country that's been naughty this month and must be punished.
What?
Joanna,
ReplyDeleteThat's as plausible an explanation as I've yet heard.
And if the hole is in the ocean, they pick on Israel.
ReplyDeleteGames are dangerous. Last time the guys at NASA played Jenga, we wound up on the moon.
What?
you just insulted every tarot card ever made.
ReplyDeleteMy money is on the Magic 8-ball. When Obama was flunking out of Occidental it was all the rage in the dormitory. And it sounds less Republican-looney than Astrology does.
ReplyDeleteAlthough the puzzle-piece theory sure explains a lot. . .
