While talking on the phone yesterday, I idly field-stripped a Colt 1903 that happened to be at hand. You know, the way you'd twirl a pencil or something to keep your hands busy.
Now I've got a pile of Colt on my mouse pad (it's a big mouse pad: one of those Glock armorer's pads, so there's room for both the mouse and the pony.)
I'm just not motivated to put it back together right this second. Plus, I really should oil it before I do. And maybe I should take a picture while it's still apart, for an eventual Arms Room post.
Whatever. Anyway, now I have a pile of gun taking up half my mouse pad...
.
Good lord... wipe it with oil and put it back together, before the third sproingy from the right inverts itself into another dimension, and you are left hunting for hundred year old pistol guts.
ReplyDelete^^2nd that,
ReplyDeleteHad to find a barrel bushing for a 1903. it was a $30 expedition plus shipping. grrr.

wv, stews: what I did til the part came in.
On the other hand, at least you're not living in a hovel where you have a pile of mice taking up half your gun pad . . .
ReplyDelete;-)
Save it for your next phone call.

Or before the cat discovers all these small things to bat around
ReplyDeleteI once wrote a gun-cleaning primer that several times included "Remove cat from table and move to next step."
You still use a mouse pad?
ReplyDelete"You still use a mouse pad?"
ReplyDeleteYeah. The noise a mouse makes on a Formica tabletop bugs the piss out of me. Plus it provides at least a little cushion for the heel of my hand and wrist.
I had no idea it was unfashionable.
I wish I lived nearby. I would love to be able to be your gun photographer.
ReplyDeletealan only uses Apple products ...
ReplyDeleteThey are getting away from the mouse pad, and moving to the Etcha-Sketch twin knob / shake to erase system.
Oh, and at least get a plastic bag or tupperware box for the parts ... they will sneak off the second you look the other way.
ReplyDeleteTam, I still use a mousepad for exactly the same reasons you do. Makes it easier on the carpal tunnel. Who cares if it's "unfashionable"? :)
ReplyDeleteWhat's wrong with mousepads?
ReplyDeleteI have one with a raised portion to support my wrist. It sits on top of a nice, grabby BCM mouse pad.
Oh and about those parts: pics or it didn't happen ;-)
Terry
Mouse? ugh. I hates them meeces to pieces! How about giving one of these a try -

Much better on your wrist, and if you play MMO's, like WoW, or FPS games, you'll find it MUCH easier to kite with your Hunter, or line up a shot. Not to mention you don't have to chase it all over the desk. Also furtive cross-screen cursor movements don't knock springs all over the floor when using a trackball ;)
"I have a pile of gun taking up half my mouse pad..."
ReplyDeleteI have a room like that.
I use taillight mice. They make no noise whatsoever on formica. Balls are so last decade. A mouse pad is stil nice, though, for the wrist-resting properties as described, but I use it under my wrist, and use the mouse on the formica.
I've turned into the guy who has a room full of random gun parts, most of which fit into one or another gun, which also happens to be somewhere in that same room.
ReplyDeleteOg,
ReplyDelete"I use taillight mice."
Me, too. Haven't used a mechanical mouse (other than on some vintage Macs) since '04 or so.
And it makes noise? on Formica?
ReplyDeleteShoot a course of 9mm fire without hearing protection. You'll never hear a mouse again.
Og,
ReplyDelete"And it makes noise? on Formica? "
I only have a small area of desk for the mouse so, given a long intarw3bz session, there's a lot of picking up the mouse and plopping it down. The neoprene pad renders that action clop-free. :o
Ah, gotcha. I put thick felt pads in place of the "normal" mouse feet. You're using two empty halves of cocoanuts and banging them together.
ReplyDeleteStumped? Doubt it. You just like having a "pile of gun" at hand. :)
ReplyDeleteBut speaking of that, "...I've got a pile of Colt on...one of those Glock armorer's pads."
There's something poetic about that that particular juxtaposition and clash of cultures and generations.

I rather doubt Tam is stumped by a field stripped 1903 ... its only three or four parts.
ReplyDeleteI change my mouse pads when they get too dirty, or too marked-up. I used to use paper towels for mouse pads, but the previous tenants here left me a big stack of thick rigid pieces of paper which not only give good traction to the mouse ball but are good for writing notes upon.
ReplyDeleteI found that either Wally World or the dollar stores will fairly regularly have the flat food-storage containers that work very nicely for keeping one pistol-worth of parts together. And they stack, too!

ReplyDeleteI know it is kinda past prime for replying here, but have you adjusted your mouse movement sensitivity? I get from one end of a dual monitor setup to the other end (3840 pixels) without deflecting my wrist annoyingly, let alone picking up mr mouse.
