QotD: Truth In Labeling Edition

"Finally, Obama adheres to his promise of transparency...

Buying votes by forcing banks to forgive student loans is the most transparent thing he’s done yet."

-Robb Allen, on the latest Free Beer! proposal from the White House.
Give the guy credit for some positively Clintonian savvy here: He couldn't have better targeted his base, short of ordering five hundred vegan pizzas delivered to Zuccotti Park.

  1. But... aren't all student loans federally-guaranteed? And the feds have passed oodles of legislation making it impossible to get out of federal student loans - they are the only debts that continue *even after you are dead.*

Has he announced that the Feds are going to release their claws? Or even reduce or eliminate student loan welfare?

Cato has a nice analysis of this proposal:

  2. I have become convinced that the OWS "movement" is just another political ploy organized by ACORN at the behest of Obama as a way to control the debate come election time. Notice how he's been working on many of the items that are on the unofficial OWS "list of demands".

Single payer health care? Yep he is working on it.

"Living Wage" regardless of employment? That too! Obama has been extending unemployment to a rediculous extreme (it's a start).

Free College? Sure, Only have to pay 10% of take-home for 20 years and then the rest is just forgiven. Hey, we can't do it all overnight can we?

$1 trillion in infrastructure? Wouldn't you know it, those damn terrorist America hating Republicans are fighting him on this one.

    Yadda yadda yadda...

People are stupid. It will probably work too.

  3. Transparent? He's effing bare-ass nekkid with this one. I wonder if those kids will understand, or care, that they are being played. No, probably not, sigh.

  4. Yeah, this is a great ploy to by votes. Also writes off debt owed the taxpayers at a time when the US is about to be downgraded again by the credit agencies. Smart economics, that!

  5. It looks more Wilhem II than Clinton to me... then again, most of what Obama does tends to remind me of the hapless Kaiser.

One thing my study of history has convinced me of is that the "Machivellian Chessmaster With a Sinister Plan" model is utter bunk. It's more "Machivellian Wannabe Screws Up Everything for Everyone".

  6. He may 'try' to forgive those loans, but I'm pretty sure Congress will fight him on that one!

  7. Joe in PNG hast recht, ich glaube. I think it was Oxenstierna who told his King not to be surprised by how little wisdom was used in governing the World.

  8. P.s. I think I would actually be a bit happier if I knew that the Bilderbergers, the Masons, the Rothschilds, the Bohemian Grove guys, the CFR, or whoever, were actually running the world.

I have just entered my seventh decade on the planet, and I would like a little stability, please. I know I speak for my cat as well. He is sixteen.

  9. So, if Obama forgives student loans, does that mean the Dept of Ed has to give back it's SWAT team?

There were reports a while back that claimed the US got more value from giving student grants than from student loans. So, though I don't support much of what Obama does, there may be some merit to dropping the tracking of student loans, the lawsuits, and the civil disruption of the residue of extravagant college fees. Too many people are making too much money, over and above what it takes to operate a University, and too many people suffer too much to put students in school.

I have some doubts that what Obama proposes is intended to benefit Americans and America. But this might be a slip up of his, and actually be a benefit.

  10. Trust me. You don't want the Masons running the world.

    wv: nation. Huh.

  11. Supposedly, this won't make it through Con-gress, thus theoretically saving the money, but still getting His Imperial Majesty the magical "yout' vote."
I keep wondering what would happen if the House were to approve it, leaving it up to the Senate to vote it down, allegedly garnering yout' votes for members of the so-called "Republican Congress", but still preserving the veil of fiscal responsibility, massive, endemic loan defaults or not.
