We're nearing the denouement of a pretty nasty little mayoral race here in Hoosieropolis. I'd originally determined to cast my vote for the wookie, Chris Bowen, but the Democrat challenger has almost convinced me to vote (R) purely out of spite.
Her campaign came out of the corner head-butting and eye-gouging and hasn't thrown a punch above the belt since. It didn't help that, being the challenger, her ads started much earlier than his, and she apparently has quite a big war chest. The result is that for several months now the morning TeeWee has been full of commercials accusing the current mayor of actively running businesses out of town and sneaking around at night, setting fires at orphanages.
The few commercials Melina Kennedy has actually run about her own positions all tend to show that she's strongly in favor of improving things over which the mayor has no control. I'm half-expecting her next commercial to either point out that, if elected, she will fight to stop nuclear proliferation, or that Mayor Greg Ballard is still refusing to curtail the menace of Nazis on the moon.
You would be surprised how much influence mayors have over the "jobs" thing. The even mayor of my small town has significant influence over zoning, land development, and business licenses to operate in the town. Additionally, she and the town council were instrumental in getting a significant manufacturing plant located in our town limits. But I agree the other stuff is hogwash...
ReplyDeleteI like apple pie too.
ReplyDelete1 gallon apple cider
1/2 gallon apple juice
6 cinnamon sticks
3 cups sugar
Simmer for 1 hour. Strain out the spices. Let cool to room temp. Add 1 qt moonshine.
It helps when dealing with things like politics.
Amen.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite was on last even, when The Second Coming of Bart ran an add criticizing Ballard for not joining over 600 mayors in some anti-gun initiative. How dast he!
ReplyDeleteLOL- Gotta love local politics... It's a good substitute for mud wrestling, and anything goes...
ReplyDeleteDo you have a Libertarian running for mayor? I know Ed Colman is running for city council again.
ReplyDeleteNazis on the Moon! Hogwash! Everyone KNOWS they moved to Mars YEARS ago!
ReplyDeleteMaybe her campaign manager is Captain Lou Albano.

Sweet 'Iron Sky' reference.

Nice Heinlein reference. I loved all his kids' books.
ReplyDeletegenedunn,
ReplyDeleteSounds like two things mayors can do to help with jobs:
1) get their gol-darned gubmint out of the gol-darned way. Good idea, but definitely not what this chick has in mind.
2) Throw all kinds of taxpayer-funded perks and favors at her cronies, so they will open up a brand new eco-friendly political correctness plant. Kind of like the Pres and his Tesla cars buddies. The value of this kind of thing should be self-evident, but it does seem to create all kinds of happiness for politicians.

ReplyDeleteDo you serve the Kittens with Ice cream or cheddar? And do you prefer the lattice crust or the full crust?
Gotta ask the important questions.
And I am entirely in favor of apple pie! And kittens! And kitten pie!!!
ReplyDeleteTwo words: union backing.
