Flintlocks and Flop-topsBobbi and I went to the Fun Show at the Indianapolis Nasty Guard Armory today. Among other priceless treasures, she picked up a High Standard Sentinel deuce-deuce resolver, and I snagged a very early postwar (1946?) FN 1922 in .32ACP and a box of Prvi Partizan 8mm Lebel ammo. (Finalists for me included a Russian SKS, French MAB 1935A, and an S&W .38 1st Model "lemon squeezer"...)
And Number Three Russians
Black-powder Mausers
From jackbooted Prussians,
Shiny Smith PC's from limited runs
These are a few of my favorite guns.
Socketed bay'nets
On Zulu War rifles,
Engraved, iv'ried Lugers
That make quite an eyefull
Mosin tomato stakes sold by the ton
These are a few of my favorite guns.
Rusty top-breaks!
Smallbore Schuetzens!
And all of Browning's spawn
I just keep on browsing my favorite guns
Until all my money's gone.
Hey, don't I have a blog where I could post pictures of my latest ancient .32?
Nice!
ReplyDeleteYou know, lady, you need to get a few semi-musically inclined folks together and record that little ditty for YouTube.
ReplyDeleteMC
Sweet!
ReplyDeleteJust out of curiosity, how were prices? Still astronomically rocketing upwards, leveling off, or starting to return to normal?
The M1935A is a fun gun to take apart and look at - despite its crude manufacture.
ReplyDeleteBut its no fun to shoot. The trigger is awful and the ammo so expensive that you scramble around the range making sure that not a single casing escapes.
Congratulations to your roomie. I love my High Standard Durango 22.
ReplyDelete"Hey, don't I have a blog where I could post pictures of my latest ancient .32?"
ReplyDeleteI'm not so sure. Given that tomorrow it will be eight months since you posted on it, it might be seeing someone else. I'd post on it, but I'm taken.
A "resolver"?
ReplyDelete(Normally, I wouldn't comment on a typo, but I'm curious...)
Yes, it resolves the differences with that guy who thinks he needs your wallet more than you do...
ReplyDeleteAnd Nasty Guard? Not referring to me are you, Ma'am?
Ah, yes. I think of that huntin' 'n gatherin' post over at Atomic Nerds.
ReplyDeleteI haven't been to a Fun Show in years, but I do remember "shopping like a woman." The only thing that saved me was the emptiness of my pocket.
If I enter a hardware store, book store, gun store, or (most 'specially) a good hobby shop, I try to make sure I don't have a lot of money on me, because when I walk out, I am guaranteed to have a lot less than I had when I went in.
P.s. I mind a tiny little hobby shop a county or two north of Atlanta, back around '92. They specialized in the old-fashioned stuff, with genuine Jap tissue, and nitrate dope, and good rubber, and the finest balsa I have ever seen. The balsa was Hazel's finest, a good bunch of it quarter-sawn and less than 4 lbs/cubic foot (I always bring a balance and calculator when buying balsa).
ReplyDeleteThat balsa was _talking_ to me. It said, "Hi, sailor! Buy me a drink?"
I left with an empty wallet, and quite happy.
P.p.s. Heaven on earth for me would be living and working in Montezuma, Iowa, and having to decide between spending too much money at Brownell's or spending too much money at Sig.
ReplyDeleteI have a High Standard Sentinel with 6" barrel that I picked up a while ago for cheap. It's a great inexpensive tool for training trigger control due to the long heavy trigger and cheap ammo.
ReplyDeleteTam,
ReplyDeleteYour addiction is showing....
This is the guy you need to get to perform your song.

I like your version much better than the original. :)
ReplyDeleteFirst handgun I ever fired was a High Standard Sentinel.
I love the Gun Show Song. Emptiness of wallet unfortunately will preclude me from attending one until likely New Years.
ReplyDeleteI've only seen a couple MAB's before, and already have the Russki SKS (More commonly referred to as an AK47 by the lamestream press).
I haven't seen a FN pistol recently, save the recent incarnations of course. Haven't heard anything good out of those.
Why so the "nasty guard" comment? Did the National Guard or one of their soldiers offend/harm you? Do you comment similarly about active component soldiers? Are you aware that many National Guard units have been deployed multiple times since 9-11-2001? I have to think that something else is at work here, I don't think you'd gratuitously make such a comment.
ReplyDeleteHobie,
ReplyDeleteYou'll have to ask the Georgia Army National Guard E-5 from whom I learned the term.
Lighten up. It's meant tongue-in-cheek.
Do you have your song copyrighted? I think you ought to.
ReplyDeleteAlso... one of the last fun shows I went to a fellow had a gold plated Luger, but can't recall if it was ivory gripped. Was tempted by merely the fact it likely had more than its price tag in both gold and blaster...but not temped enough, and didn't have the 1600 clams in my pocket either.
