Obligatory Thanksgiving Post:

All of me here on the staff of View From The Porch would like to wish all of you out there in readerland a very happy and highly-caloric Thanksgiving.

Take a moment to remember the real meaning of the holiday, which apparently involves a bunch of guys in funny hats with bell-mouthed muzzleloaders dragging a giant floating Snoopy balloon ashore on Manhattan island, eating turkey and stuffing until they puked, then pounding beers while watching the Cowboys pound the Redskins. Amen.

  3. +1 to Jay G.

A day of family, eating, drinking and football. It doesn't get much better.

  4. Happy Thanksgiving at Roseholme.
Though I might point out that this year the designated victim is the Miami Dolphins. Apparently the Redskins finally found something better to do.

  5. It's good to take a moment to reflect on and be thankful for our comparatively good fortune.

Topping the list for me is a loving family, decent health, moderate financial comfort, and the luck of the draw to be in a flawed-but-superior-to-any-other country.

But also on the list is my pretty much daily visit to this Porch; the humor, historical and technical knowledge, and occasional lively debate is something I look forward to and appreciate.

So thanks to all of you there at VFTP, Tam. Now go get fat so the rest of us can feel better about our gluttony. And don't forget to call your Mama.

  6. The Pilgrims gave the Indians alcohol and smallpox and they got tobacco and syphilis in return...or something like that.

  15. Tam,

And here I thought the day was established by a past US President (not Bill Clinton, nor even Richard Nixon) as a Christian day of thanksgiving for the blessings God granted to America.

Which became the rest-up day of feasting before the heroic shopping spree the next day.

Praise the Lord, and pass the ammunition. Blessed be!

  16. Happy Thanksgiving Tam! I guess it is not tryptophan that is the culprit, but vast quantities of food that is inducing this delightful torpor.
    All the best to you.

  17. "Cowboys pound the Redskins"

That was last week. You watching re-runs ?

  18. For those of you who have children and still have the Little Golden Books etc about the holiday, go and get them out, read the part about how much the Pilgrims and Indians loved one another and then not the pictures of all of them at the dinner table with slung weapons. I have been know to have a gun at dinner but I can't recall ever bringing a long gun to the table.

  19. >That was last week. You watching re-runs?

While it was last week, it went into overtime, so I assume they almost pulled it off. The Redskins have had an awful season this year, and almost actually pulling off a win against of all teams, Dallas, might have been their finest moment this year.

  21. Happy turkey day!

We normally shoot right after the meal, but some plant overgrowth means the shooting will have to wait til tomorrow when we get out the bush-hog.

Ate till I was ready ta pop.
Then sat down to a fine bottle of St. Lucian Rum. Sure tasted right fine.
Today, this early morn, not so much.

So K though, heading out to the huntin camp tonight for a three day weekend.
