Overheard in Roomie's Bedroom:

Roomie's TV goes off at 0530. I go in and take advantage of the fact that it doesn't wake her up to do some channel surfing until it's breakfast time for Huck and Rannie, looking for blogfodder.

At 0600, I flip from the O'Reilly Report to the Rachel Maddow Show*. Spock now has a beard. Rachel does not. (But she should get one or people might start talking.)
Rachel Maddow: "...and meanwhile, Ron Paul is just gathering up all these delegates. What is he going to do with them?"

Me: "Build a moon rocket and threaten the world!"
(Incidentally, I found this photo of Rachel's bookshelf interesting.)

* I just can't bring myself to watch Fox & Friends. I swear to Vishnu, Fox's morning show looks like a parody of a conservative morning talk show you'd see in a dystopian Verhoeven near-future SciFi flick. Five or ten minutes' exposure to that bubble-headed prattle sucks IQ points from my head like a shop-vac in a Dixie cup.

  1. Cool GI Joe. Think I might need to get "The Gun"; had not seen that one before.

  4. Yeah, but on Fox and Friends, they are wearing skirts! And...well, yeah. I'm not really sure what that means about their target demographic.

I don't watch the news in the morning anymore...I flip between CMT/VH1 and the Weather Channel. I have just as much effect on the Weather as I do on what the Republicant's are gonna do, so I might as well pay attention to the more useful one.

  5. Redeye at 3am is the best thing on FNC. If you don't have a DVR you can get some eps. on Hulu.

  6. Having been following C.J.'s NYT column before the book came out, I knew it would be good (as indeed it was).

Oh, and Tam, I think you are the perfect person to author your proposed "The Other Gun".

On another note, having just received a copy of "Steam, Steel and Shellfire", another tome you spoke well of, I became aware that is is actually the 4th volume of an intended 12 volume run on naval history. have you read any of the other titles?

  7. Regarding Maddow's bookshelf, why does she have a Chris Costa action figure there on the top shelf?

  8. Not a big surprise that Firefox knows Kalashnikov, actually. Russia/Soviet Union had/has no consumer brand name known worldwide (Think Sony, Apple, Mercedes, Microsoft, etc etc). But if there's anyone anywhere who doesn't know either Kalashnikov or AK, it must be someone like those Japanese soldiers who have been hiding in the jungle since 1945.

  9. Looks like she is reading up so all of MSNBC can refer to her on gun issues. That maybe what they are doing now.....who cares it's not like anyone watches that channel outisde of you for purely perverse reasons. ;-)

  10. Also maybe they think Ron Paul is gonna pull a Spiral Zone with all those delegates....

  11. The bookshelf blog post was written by someone going by the name of "Julia Nutter."

This is an example either of a very self-deprecating pseudonym or being born under a bad sign. Not enough information available to discern which.

  12. Have you ever heard Spock's Beard? They rock -- at least until Neal Morse left the band.
